The Second Law of Thermodynamics

Yes indeed, that is one of the things we talked about in Science yesterday.  I laughed to myself because I thought it interesting that this was subject matter for a Science "text" geared for elementary students.  My 8th grader, 3rd grader, and 1st grader didn't even flinch when I threw this title at them.  The book (God's Design for Heaven and Earth: Our Planet Earth - see it  here, at the Answers in Genesis store) gave a good explanation of what the Laws stated.  And then we proved the Second Law like this:

Tie a tennis ball to a string and suspend it from the doorway.  Pull the ball back so it doesn't quite touch Landon's nose...

Let go and stand still.... will the ball hit him as it swings back?

No, it won't - because of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which states that all objects tend to go to a state of rest or disorganization, in other words: things slow down.  You can also prove this (which we did, but I didn't take a picture) by dropping a tennis ball and watching it bounce.  Each bounce gets smaller until the ball eventually stops.

And yes, Landon was still in his pajamas when we did this.    I didn't care so much, except they are warm flannel winter pjs and it was in the 90s yesterday.  Why would he choose those pjs when it's still summer weather, and then STAY in them all day long?

I don't think anyone can figure out what kids are thinking when they get dressed. Pants in summer and muscle shirts in winter. And after all we have taught them.... who knows??? By the way, that title scared me at first.

I like winter p.j.'s in the summer because of the a/c. And summer p.j.'s in the winter because of the heat. Makes perfect sense to me! LOL!

And they'd normally have to wait till high school for Physics. I love homeschooling! =D

I love his expression-- priceless!

We're going to do AIG's The Human Body this year for science. It looks fantastic! Keep me posted on how you like the Heaven & Earth one... we may do that next year.
