BFS Assignment #100 {Oh What a Feeling}

Assignment: Take time this week to write about YOU and your feelings of trials and triumphs with homeschooling.  Touch on when you first heard about the concept of home schooling and whether you tip-toed into the idea or just jumped in and never looked back.  Share your schooling as a child and how you compare it to what your goals are for your children.

I posted an introduction to our family and our reasons for homeschooling in a post a couple weeks ago:  Homeschool Memoirs {All About You}  DH and I first heard about homeschooling when a homeschooling family started attending our church.  It didn't take long before we were thinking that we wanted to consider that option when we had a family.  By the time our oldest was three years old, we had met a few other families that homeschooled and had made our decision to homeschool and have never seriously considered anything else.  I went to a public school, and although I did well and for the most part I enjoyed school; looking back, I can see the aspects that were negative.

We want our kids to be taught from a Biblical worldview, not a secular humanistic worldview.  Let's face it, things are different in the public schools now compared to all those years ago when I attended.  It wasn't perfect, but it was less antagonistic towards religious influence, at least.  We want our kids to be able to study at their individual pace and ability, and to develop their own interests; not be defined by whether they are above or below the "average" or limited by their classmates, classrooms, or state demands.  One negative lesson I learned from my school days is that it's dangerous to be different in any way - smarter than the other kids, slower than the other kids, clumsier than the other kids, shyer than the other kids, louder than the other kids, taller than the other kids, skinnier than the other kids... no matter what was different, it was best to hide that from the crowd as much as possible and focus on blending in.

My verse for this week:

"Hear, O Israel:  The LORD our God, the LORD is one!  You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.  And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." ~ Deut. 6:4-
