Homeschool Mother's Journal: New Year 2013 Edition

In our homeschool... we started easing back into a school routine on Wednesday.  I asked the kids to work on their math, language arts, and art, since those are the things they do on their own.  And we finished the last few chapters of the book Little Town on the Prairie and they answered the questions about that.

Spencer got back to work on most of his subjects too.  He is doing Consumer Math with Switched-on Schoolhouse, and couldn't get it to work though.  We figured that out this morning, so now I think we can get that back on track.

I chose my word for the year - and although it's not specific to homeschooling, that's where I will need to practice it most often - Priorities.

In other news... Monday evening we brought in the New Year with friends.  We had a wonderful time, but it was a bit shadowed by a sad event in our community.  There was a fire that destroyed a building across the intersection from where our church is located.  Several businesses were lost, including the tire business where we have been going for many years.  The owner of that business is related to a family at church and he and his brother (who owned the building and leased the space to the businesses) are neighbors in our rural community.  Thankfully no one was hurt in the fire, and it was certainly a big one, with 10 local fire departments responding.

Tuesday - New Years Day - was spent relaxing at home for the most part.  In the evening, we went to a restaurant to celebrate my birthday.  Even though my birthday was actually last week.  It occurred to us that we were going to run into Landon's birthday if we didn't have my birthday dinner soon, because most of our upcoming evenings are busy!

We had company on Wednesday evening and enjoyed spending some time with good friends and their two little boys.

Helpful homeschooling tips/advice to share... My advice to myself is to stay on top of the grading and lesson plans!

What's working/not working for us... staying home more often.  So far it hasn't worked that well this week, but I'm going to be doing my best to limit our trips to town during the day to ONE a week.  Wish me luck.  I'll need it.

Thoughts/questions I have... how can I reorganize and tweak my routines to get things done and be more efficient?

One of my favorite things this week... being with friends and family.

Finished Love Amid the Ashes.  During the week I also wrote a little about some of the books I finished recently on Just A Second.

A parting shot...

Now that's a good word: priorities. I can't decide for me! Maybe my word should be DECISIVE. LOL

Hahaha! Love your "resolution." :-) Good luck staying on top of the planning - that is the hardest thing for me too.
