Homeschool Mother's Journal: Almost Finished Edition {Blog Every Day in May}

In our homeschool... We had an especially late start on Monday, as the boys were out extra late Sunday evening at hockey. However, once we got going, we completed two history lessons (we needed to catch up!) and Kennady worked on the lapbook (we just reviewed The 20th Century in America from Home School in the Woods), which is now almost finished.

On Tuesday I worked on science with boys, and we did one history lesson - it was a long one!

Our history lesson on Wednesday was about the Florida Everglades, and the boys did another science lesson. We've only got one more chapter left to study, so it feels like we're almost finished even though there is still plenty of observation to do!

Thursday's history lesson was on the US Mint and state quarters program - I knew that those quarter collections would come in handy someday! Spencer and I had a full afternoon of shopping and his driving instruction planned, so I left Landon and Kennady to work on math and language arts on their own. 

On Friday we completed two history lessons - one about Habitat for Humanity and the other about homeschooling in America. That got us back on track in history again, and we now have just one week of history left!! The boys have been more faithful in the observation activities for astronomy this week. Kennady is almost finished language arts, she is writing a mini-newspaper as a "final project".

And I started looking through the new resources I purchased at the curriculum fair last weekend. I guess sometime soon I need to make a proper shopping list for the big curriculum fair coming up in Harrisburg.

  

In other news... the week started out with rain on Monday, so Kennady's softball game for that day was cancelled. But it warmed up quickly after that and we've enjoyed beautiful spring days the rest of the week. On Friday evening, Spencer attended the first of the grad celebrations - a Junior Senior Banquet. I was going out to another event with Harrison, so I didn't get to take a picture of Spencer all spiffed up in his suit. But I did grab a quick shot of Dad giving a demonstration of how to tie a tie.

Helpful homeschooling tips/advice to share... It's okay if your kids don't LIKE to read. It took me awhile to be okay with that, because I have trouble understanding it, but not everybody enjoys reading. One of my favorite things this week... Music related things... Tuesday evening, the community choir I sing with had rehearsal on stage and with our special guest artist, and I loved the gospel music especially! I definitely felt like I'd been to church! Then, Harrison and I attended a concert at University of Maryland last night - his friend is in the choir. They performed Verdi's Te Deum and it was breathtaking! Two very different musical experiences, but both were wonderful.

A photo/video/quote or link to share... I have a lot of favorite quotes, and it's hard to pick just one. Since I mentioned music as one of my favorite things that happened this week, I picked out this quote from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to share. Music can somehow express and speak to things that are difficult to put into words.

Music is the universal language of mankind.
