This is a quick project Kennady did last week - a Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign. I'm sure there are printables of hex sign designs available on the internet, but Kennady wanted to draw her own. No one knows where our compasses are (typical! Ha!) so she traced the circles around a couple of plates and lids from the kitchen cupboards. She drew the rest of her design freehand, but this project would be a great tie-in for studying geometry.

Hex signs got their name from the fact that the designs are generally six-sided, not because they are used for "hexing"! However, the colors and symbols used do have some specific meanings, including wishes for good luck and abundant harvests. The designs are a common sight on barns in Pennsylvania.

This art project idea - along with many others - comes from Geography Through Art by Sharon Jeffus and Jamie Aramini.

You can grab the button above and add it to your post. Add your link here to share your child's art or your arts and crafts how-to posts. Please visit the other blogs and admire what's on their Virtual Refrigerators!

I have always wondered the meaning behind all the hex signs you see. Kennedy did a great job on hers. Will be linking up a little later today.
