November's Art Challenge: Thanksgiving
The hosts of the Virtual Refrigerator put our heads together and decided to give a themed challenge to each other and to our readers each month. For November, the theme is Thanksgiving, and we'd like to you to link up and pin your artwork related to that theme. We'll be featuring themed submissions to the Fridge as we go along. Please continue to share any art posts on our Virtual Fridge as well - we love seeing all of them! - and we hope the theme provides a little additional challenge and inspiration!

We found something on Pinterest that worked the way it was portrayed! How cool is that. Kennady and I volunteered to "teach" a craft at our homeschool group's annual Christmas Craft Breakfast in about a month, and we chose to do a simple fleece wreath that I'd seen in a couple different formats on Pinterest. Yesterday we did a trial run of the project to help us get a better idea of how much time it would take. It's really very simple!

I bought a bargain fleece blanket at WalMart (under $3) and we cut strips from that. Unfortunately there weren't any prints that really said "Christmas" to me, but I'm hoping that I can find some cheap fleece before the breakfast in holiday patterns. I chose this blue print as the most suitable of what they had to choose from. We cut strips about 1-1/2 inches by 6 inches. Kennady had prepared a wire hanger as the frame by bending it into a circle shape. Then she tied the fleece strips onto the hanger (just simple knots) and pushed them together to make it full. We think we used around 100-150 of the strips. Kennady is going to count them so that when we prep for the craft breakfast, we can cut and pre-package the strips in bundles that should cover a wreath frame.

Once the hanger is completely covered with the fleece strips, bend the hook part into a circle so it's a built-in hanging loop for the wreath. We thought about covering it with ribbon or yarn that matches the fleece, which is a good idea to make it more finished-looking, but it's not absolutely necessary. You can see a little bit of the red wire sticking out from the hook, so we will have to bend that in with pliers. The only other thing we have yet to do with almost-finished wreath is to tie or hot-glue a bow or other decoration on it. I found several ideas at the dollar store and craft store, so when I get the supplies for the craft breakfast, I'll be able to choose things that will match the fleece we use then. For our sample wreath, I know I have some sparkly snowflake decorations that would be perfect - I just have to go find them in the boxes of Christmas decorations, and I'm a little stubborn about getting those out this early in November! I will share updated pictures once we've added that finishing touch to this wreath, and once we have some wreaths with more Christmas-y looking fabric.

There you have it. Assembling the wreath took maybe 15 minutes, so once the fleece is cut into the strips, this is a great project to put together quickly. Maybe while you're watching your favorite Christmas special or the Thanksgiving Day parade. :-)

You can grab the button above and add it to your post. Add your link here to share your child's art or your arts and crafts how-to posts. Please visit the other blogs and admire what's on their Virtual Refrigerators!

My momma showed me how to make the wreaths when I was younger, we used tissue paper then.I'm going to teach my older girls how to make one now that you've jogged my memory.
