Middle School Monday - Art In Every Subject

Welcome to Middle School Monday! This is the final week of the 2015 Virtual Curriculum Fair and we are talking about how we are "Seeking Beauty" - through the arts, handicrafts, music, or whatever else adds beauty to our homeschool. Making art and music a part of our homeschool day has been so much easier with my daughter than it ever was with my sons! She loves art and music, and even if those were not included in our lesson plans, she would be find a way to work them in.

For the past couple of years, we've used materials from ARTistic Pursuits as our primary art instruction, and I highly recommend them. This year, Kennady is still working on lessons from the ARTistic Pursuits Middle School level books, but I am allowing her to pick her projects from among the last couple of units in each book that she hadn't completed. I also give her art assignments inspired by our cultural geography study, many of which come from the book, Geography Through Art. She comes up with her own ideas of things to draw or create as she is working on science, literature, and sometimes even math. Recently, she's also started coming up with ideas from the monthly art challenge theme on the Virtual Refrigerator. (The Virtual Refrigerator is a weekly art post link-up that I co-host with two other bloggers - we would love to have you join us!)

I've talked enough - let me show off some of Kennady's artwork from the past few months!

These are lessons from ARTistic Pursuits.


These are some of the projects inspired by geography study.


These are some of the things she comes up with inspired by science. She is studying meteorology this year. Her sketches of experiments always have extra detail and artistic flair, and even though the four seasons picture was an activity suggested in her science book, she wasn't satisfied with just doing a simple sketch. She took some extra time to do the drawing with chalk pastels.


I "commissioned" Kennady to create an original piece of art to send to my aunt for her birthday.


Kennady was asked to do a live art presentation during the Christmas Eve service, and this was the result.

Much of her inspiration comes from books, movies, and TV shows that she likes.

Kennady also takes piano and guitar lessons, and I rarely have to remind her to practice. She loves to play, and has started writing some of her own music. She sings in a Children's Chorus that provides a comprehensive music and performance education. She's in her second year with the chorus, and looking forward to a trip to New York City in June, when the chorus will perform at Carnegie Hall! It's a good thing she's not a music snob, because I love having her join the worship team that I lead at church as well.
