In our homeschool . . . This week was one in which we snatched a few minutes for schoolwork here and there in between the many other things we had going on. I expect next week will be much the same, because that's just how it is during the holidays.

Music lessons and rehearsals, gym class, and Civil Air Patrol all went on as usual, although we had to be at Civil Air Patrol extra early this week. And in addition to our usual activities, we had to fit in the Christmas Craft breakfast on Friday morning, as well as an extra art project that Kennady took on - designing and painting a backdrop for the kids' Christmas play at church.

finished, but needs a bit more drying time!
So somewhere in there, yes, we did get some math and history and science done. But I haven't graded it yet! If all goes well, I may get in some grading tomorrow afternoon so that I'll have some idea where we stand headed into our last full week of school before the Christmas break.

In other news . . . on Saturday evening, we attended (for the first time ever) the Christmas parade in town. The Children's Chorus had a float in the parade, so Kennady needed to be there for that, so the hubster and I got a snack from a local tea shop along Main Street and settled in to watch the parade. Although there were over 60 entries in the parade, it went along quite quickly and was very enjoyable. Afterwards, we were invited to join two other families from the chorus for pizza, and had a great time doing that as well.

Sunday afternoon and Monday evening were my choir's Christmas concerts. Both went very well, and Kennady attended the Monday show and then went out with a group of us very coffee and dessert afterwards. An annual tradition we all look forward to.

On Thursday evening, while I took Kennady to an extra chorus rehearsal, the hubster went car shopping with Spencer and they made a deal! We take delivery of the new-to-Spencer car on Monday, and I will make sure to take a couple of pictures.

Kennady spent Thursday and Friday afternoons at the church, working on the painting of the backdrop. She had a lady from church working with her both days, and recruited a homeschool friend to come help on Friday. To our relief, the paint dried faster than we had expected, so the play's director was able to get the backdrop hung up in the church on Friday evening. After the dress rehearsal instead of before it, but still.

Today we have been doing some Christmas decorating - Kennady helped decorate at the church, and the hubster and I have been trying to get some done here at home. Finally. And I doubt we'll finish, because I still need to do some laundry and baking, and I'd love to take a nap, and tonight I'll be taking Kennady to the Big Band Merry Christmas concert that her chorus performs in.

Things that made me smile . . . the fun of another Christmas Craft Breakfast coming together with such a great combination of organization and creativity. The confidence Kennady had in getting that backdrop created, and the fun she had working on it with friends. Not to mention the pride of seeing the finished piece hanging at the front of the church, and the delight of people seeing it for the first time. I'm excited for the reactions of people as they arrive at church tomorrow and see it too.

I recommend . . . thinking about celebrating Saint Nicholas Day! (It's tomorrow, in case you weren't sure.) My kids really enjoyed it when they were younger, and when I was working on an article about it recently, they told me they wanted to do it again this year, so I'm getting ready. So head over to the Schoolhouse Review Crew blog and read my article! St Nicholas Day

On the bookshelf . . .

The Fatal Tree (Bright Empires) by Stephen R Lawhead
Until the Dawn by Elizabeth Camden
A Christmas Escape: A Novel by Anne Perry

I finished The Darcys of Pemberley by Shannon Winslow and reviewed it on my book blog, Just A Second, where you can find more reviews and other book-related things as well.

A parting shot . . . my friend Bev and I discovered that our scissors could be used for practicing swordplay at the Christmas Craft Breakfast.

We started celebrating St. Nicholas Day as a way to reach out to our elderly widowed neighbor. She grew up in Luxembourg and told us about her childhood, so now we always surprise her with something traditional on St. Nicholas Day. It's a fun way to learn about other cultures and to make our neighbor squeal like a schoolgirl.
