My Favorite (Teen) Son

My Favorite (Teen) Son on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

By featuring my favorite (only) daughter last week, I obliged myself to feature my son this week. But he's one of three, so I can't say he's my favorite. At least in public. How about he's my favorite teenage son. That works, because the other two are older!

Landon will be graduating in June, so one thing we are working on right now (besides the obvious - his schoolwork!) is getting together some photos and maybe a few mementos to display at the grad celebration. During our grad ceremony, we have a powerpoint presentation of photos of each of our grads, and from experience, I know that it can be quite a challenge to reduce 17 or so years of photos to just 25 to include in that presentation. Well, I've started work on that, and a couple of the following photos will probably make the cut, although almost everything I'm including here is from the past year or two.

That said, I'll start with the exception. This is one of my all-time favorite photos of Landon, from first grade. Look at the enthusiastic smile. Nowadays he's careful to smile only when there are no cameras pointed at him.

Over the past few years, when I try to take a picture of him, I'll likely get a goofy face kind of like this.

Or maybe a glare. But not a smile.

But despite the straight face, Landon is straight-up funny guy. Hilarious, actually. Unfortunately, that's hard to capture in a photo, although maybe a couple of these silly photos will give a bit of an idea.

pretending to be terrified on the plane. I'm sure the other passengers appreciated this. Not.

Or how about these - he wanted a series of photos where he acted out the warnings and "not allowed" signs we saw while in Glacier National Park.

These are just two of many "album art" photos of the kids that I have. They like to pose as if they are members of a band doing a reflective moment photo shoot for their latest CD.

Landon's sense of humor also comes out in his dedication to getting these family photo re-creations done right.

final version of the Mother's Day photo. Landon got his part perfect.

He gets along surprisingly well with his sister, and seems to truly enjoy being with family.

He's an excellent student, although he claims to not really enjoy academics. He's a stickler for detail and getting it done right - sort of a perfectionist. It's not in his immediate plans, but I do hope he decides to continue his education, because he's definitely got the smarts and the self-discipline to excel and be successful in whatever he decides to take on.

One thing he's taken on is Civil Air Patrol. He used to claim that he only did it because I signed him up and made him go, but all indications are that he really does enjoy it and is pretty motivated. It's certainly helped hone his innate leadership skills and appeals to his more serious and self-disciplined side.

And CAP means he gets to do some pretty cool things, like marching in the Memorial Day parade. Okay, now that I think about it, Memorial Day is not exactly cool. A couple years it's been uncomfortably warm. But a cool experience anyway. Other cool experiences include working with aircraft (even WWII bombers!) on the flight line, glider flights, and powered flights.

Right, remember that sense of humor I mentioned earlier? See below.

Landon is a hard worker and a natural leader. He volunteers to serve in many ways at church and in our homeschool groups. He likes sports and music and playing video games.

And he cleans up pretty nicely too.

Funny pictures! I know you'll miss him when he goes off to college. I'm already dreading the day in just a few short months when my oldest leaves.

Great pictures (even if he doesn't smile for the camera anymore)! I hadn't even thought about needing to pick out pictures to display when my daughter graduates soon. I better get started.
