A Homeschool Coffee Break Back To School Preview

Today is the first day of school at our house, and it will be busy day. Gym class also starts today, and the first choir practice of the season is this evening.

We've got new and returning curriculum we're using in our homeschool, and we've got reviews we're working on as well. Here's a quick look at the reviews we've got coming up!

Past review products that will be featured in our homeschool:

We'll be using The Power in Your Hands from Writing with Sharon Watson and Fix-it! Grammar from Institute for Excellence in Writing for English. Both were former review products that we've decided to continue with. Another IEW product we reviewed will also be part of regular line-up - Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization. This was an easy and fun program for memorizing poetry that Kennady and I work on together.

CTCMath will be helping us out in Algebra as a supplement to Life of Fred.

Biology 101 from Answers in Genesis plus some written work from SchoolhouseTeachers.com for Science. (We often mention SchoolhouseTeachers.com because it's the resource website arm of The Old Schoolhouse, which is the wonderful company we write all these reviews for!) We'll also be using some of the Biology worksheets we found at HelpTeaching.com.

The Pray-ers / Book 1 Troubles - coming during the week of September 19th



I'm reading this novel by Mark S. Mirza and will be reviewing it. It's a novel, but also an example of the power of prayer. Interesting reading!


The Cat of Bubastes from Heirloom Audio Productions - coming during the week of September 26th

We are very excited about this one for a couple of reasons. This novel is the first one Kennady will be assigned for Literature this year, and since she's already read it (okay, it was read aloud to her), hearing it as an audio drama will be a wonderful way to remember it. And even if it wasn't part of our regular schoolwork, we have just loved every one of the Heirloom Audio Productions adventures so far!

Working It Out: Poetry Analysis with George Herbert from Everyday Education - coming during the week of October 3rd

I received this devotional study of the poetry of George Herbert last week, and it's something that I will be using for myself. Since Kennady and I will be working on poetry memorization, I will be offer her the opportunity to read and enjoy some of the poems as well, and we will go from there.

This review is for ME, although I won't be at all opposed if other family members want to help me out! Plus I'm sure the whole family will benefit. From the High School Lesson Book is my weekly post on something related to homeschooling high school. It's accompanied by a link-up inviting anyone homeschooling their high school students to share their posts about the experience as well. The Virtual Refrigerator is a weekly art link-up that I've been participating in and co-hosting for a few years. The idea is that in our homes we often display our children's latest artwork on our fridge, so why not expand that and show off their projects on a Virtual Fridge?! Each week we invite bloggers to "grab a virtual magnet" and do just that. I've found that those virtual magnets can hold all kinds of projects - not just drawings and paintings, but sculpture, models, sewing and other handcrafts, and crafty home decor!
