Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.

Grab a cup of coffee and let's get started!

Homeschool news  . . . Well, as I said Monday, this week became one in which we needed to do some catch-up again.  Catching up on the schoolwork itself, and also catching up on the grading, so that I can give Kennady an updated assignment list for the second quarter! A second quarter that actually started on Monday, though of course we don't have to turn in grades or anything like that. For the most part, we're not in bad shape, except for the dreaded math book. So far no choir rehearsals or gym classes missed, and Kennady was back to guitar lessons this week after missing last week.

Other news . . . Kennady and I came home from Columbus on Friday, bringing Harrison with us. He was best man for his friend's wedding on Saturday, or he certainly would have opted to stay with Angela and the baby instead! We made it work with a quick turnaround trip so he could get to the wedding and back home again in a short time. And Angela's mom was able to stay with her, so she wasn't alone.

Look at her staring up at her daddy! The cuteness!

The wedding was quite an interesting one, and with a few firsts for me. It was the first wedding I'd ever attended that had a shuttle bus to take guests from parking lots to the chapel and then to the reception venue. (And after the ceremony, the bus had "Just Married" scrolling in its sign!) It was also the first wedding I'd ever attended where a school mascot was also in attendance! The couple are University of Maryland alumni and the wedding was held on the campus, so Testudo (the Maryland Terrapins mascot) was at the reception.

Incredible organ music for the wedding!

Testudo watches the couple's first dance.

Sunday morning we all attended church, and Harrison had a chance to catch up with a few people and show off pictures of his new daughter, and then immediately after church, he and I headed back to Columbus. I went with him to visit little Veronica as soon as we got there, and I got to feed her too. On Monday morning, I got up fairly early and headed back home, and basically just hoped that Kennady would work on school during the day! (She really didn't get much done, but whatever.) I had to be back for my choir practice in the evening.

The rest of the week has been pretty normal routine, except that I stayed up until 3AM or something crazy on election night. I'm a politics junkie, although I'm usually careful to not discuss it here on the blog; and I was particularly interested in the outcome of this election. I have to say that I found it pretty good entertainment in a lot of ways - the suspense, the drama! - but had it gone the other direction I'm sure it would have made me quite ill. As it is, I'm disgusted with the behavior of all those who are using the results as an excuse to behave violently and with hatred.

The kitties had to go to the vet to be spayed and declawed this week and I'll be picking them up today; and also today the hubster and I are headed to Columbus yet again. My third trip and his first. We're helping Harrison and Angela with their move this weekend, and DH wants to meet Veronica. Here's  a picture of me (I'm Nonnie) meeting Veronica!

Today is Remembrance Day and Veteran's Day.
Take the time to thank the veterans you know for their service; and take a moment of silence to remember those who gave their lives in that service.

While in the United States, the focus today is on veterans, in Canada and other countries in the British Commonwealth, November 11th is designated as Remembrance Day (formerly Armistice Day). The day has been set aside since the end of World War I, to remember the members of the armed forces that lost their lives in the line of duty. In Canada and the United Kingdom, the red poppy is symbolic of Remembrance Day, due in part to the poem written by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae and the custom that grew of wearing a red poppy on Armistice Day to remember those who died in the war. Macrae served and fought in the Flanders region of Belgium during World War I, and composed the poem after burying his close friend at Ypres and noting how quickly the poppies grew up around the graves.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
~In Flanders Fields, John McCrae

On my blogs last week . . .

Just A Second is where I share book reviews and other book-related things, and update on what's on my bookshelf. This week I've been reading:

A parting shot . . . I grabbed this picture on my cellphone and realized later that it included Kennady taking the same picture on her iPod. And doesn't begin to capture the incredible view from this spot on the I-70.

What a busy (but fun!) week! The baby is adorable. The school mascot at the wedding is pretty neat. And your coffee mug is beautiful. :)

thought all your wedding firsts interesting. They would all be firsts for me as well. And oh... the wee baby. Enjoy that wee one if you can again. :)

Good luck with the move! My sister moved when her oldest was just a newborn and since I was 9 mo. pregnant with my oldest at the time it was my job to just watch and hold the baby; best moving day ever. :)

The move went really well, and quickly, and their new apartment is very nice. And Veronica came home from the hospital today!
