Coffee Break Reading List (November 19, 2019)

Boy, do I feel foolish! I have completely forgotten to share a Coffee Break Reading List round-up for weeks now. Not sure what happened to distract me, but whatever it was, I didn't even notice until late yesterday. My plan was to post these every other Monday, so this one is behind a day, but hopefully I will be back on track now.

Some of the things around the web that I've been reading or exploring during recent coffee breaks:
  • For years I've been reminding students at home and at co-op that writing notes with a pen or pencil will help them recall and understand information better. In this article, The Homeschool Scientist explains Why Doodling Is Good For Students
  • This article at Medium.com is longish, but has valuable insight on what is really going on with kids and their smartphones. The Tech Industry's War on Kids is a rather disturbing description of "How psychology is being used as a weapon against children".  I wish the solution to the problem was clearer and easier, but at the very least we should be aware.
  • Speaking of mental and emotional health, I loved this article from Christ and Pop Culture: The Enterprise, Deanna Troi, and the Importance of Mental Health. The Next Generation crew was my favorite Star Trek crew, and in this piece Elizabeth Garn points out the very positive and holistic view taken of mental and emotional well-being, even in a fantasy utopian world.
  • Does your church have inter-generational family worship, or do you have a separate children's church, or even a teen worship service? I think there's often a good case for separate services for different age groups, but personally I lean towards a multi-generational worship service. Intergenerational Worship is NOT . . .  is a brief but thoughtful clarification of what it is and what it isn't. Thoughts?
  • New to homeschooling? Crew blogger NA'Arah Talitha offers some of her best advice in How to Start Homeschooling: A Few Tips to Get You Started.
  • Have you been homeschooling for awhile, or do you have older students? A Net In Time has some suggestions to Gather Resources for High School Science.

Some fun things I've found during coffee breaks:

If you follow me on Facebook, you probably already know how much I LOVE the Strange Planet comic by Nathan Pyle. I pre-ordered the book and I'm eagerly anticipating its arrival this week. Go check it out on Amazon: Strange Planet

I wasn't sure what to think when Google observed, "You seem interested in pizza". I mean, I am interested in pizza, but I didn't need Google to draw attention to it. Of course, I have drawn attention to it by sharing it, haven't I? Hmmm.

Some things Homechool Review Crew members are sharing:
  • It's been almost a month since my last Reading List, so Crew members have reviewed quite a few things in that time! Best idea is to visit the Crew blog and see everything there. I will highlight a couple items though - The 2019 Blue Ribbon Awards were announced on Friday, and Crew members were linking up their own posts about their favorites. And if you're interested in joining the Crew, they just announced that they will be looking for Social Media Influencers as well as bloggers for 2020. You can find out more here: WANTED: Social Media Influencers to Join Our Team. You can also see the news release article on Faith Newswire for information and for the link to the 2020 Review Crew application for bloggers.
