Twenty-Six Lists - What Are You Good At? #twentysixlists

Welcome to Twenty Six Lists! I hope you'll join me in using some fun List prompts for writing. Every other week I'll share a writing prompt and invite you to link up your list, and wherever the prompt takes you. You may want to simply make a list of five or ten items that answer the prompt, or you may elaborate on the items in your list, or even write an entire article. Be creative, and have fun!

I am a firm believer that everyone has skill and talent. Everyone has a natural ability or natural tendency to do something really well. Often when we're asked about skill or talent, we think about athletic ability or musical talent of some sort, which may leave those who don't think they're good at sports or music or the arts to feel they don't have any talents. But what about the abilities like carpentry, mechanics, gardening, juggling, teaching, organizing, baking, preaching, or finances? Some people are especially good at story-telling, or reading aloud, or listening sympathetically. Some have an amazing ability to coordinate groups of people to work together, or to pinpoint a problem and find the solution. Some connect easily with young children, and some gravitate towards senior citizens. So many different abilities and talents in so many different areas!

And did you know that if you are a Christ-follower, you have received at least one spiritual gift? These are special abilities given to believers by the Holy Spirit, and we're to use them to serve each other and to bring glory to God.
God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. ~ I Peter 4:10
So yes, each one of us is good at something! We are naturally good at things, we have worked to develop some of our skills, and as Christians, we are divinely good at something too! But it can be hard to speak up and tell others what we're good at, right? I know I have a hard time with it. I mean, what if I say I'm good at something and someone thinks I'm lousy at it? Besides, we want to be humble and modest. This list is your chance to tell us what you're good at! I want to know!

List #4 - Skills and Talents
  1. Music - I sing and play piano. I've always loved to sing, and I have a fairly broad range. I only took voice lessons for a short while but have been singing in choirs for most of my life, and I do take technique pretty seriously, considering I'm basically an amateur. I have a good ear for harmonies. As far as piano - I started taking lessons when I was just a tyke and stuck with it all through school and college, and into my life as a young adult. I'm limited a bit by my stubby fingers but I'm decent. My sightreading skills aren't as good now because I'm a little out of practice in having anything challenging put in front of me, but that was my strength when I was younger. I got a lot of experience accompanying choirs and playing in church settings. Nowadays I seldom play from a full score, but it was in my late twenties that I suddenly found I could play very well from just chord names or a lead sheet with chords.
  2. Leading worship - So that unexpected ability to play from just chords? I think that was a spiritual gift I received when I needed it in order to serve by playing and singing in worship teams. Corporate worship has been my passion for the church for years and as long as I am able, I hope to be part of worship leadership in my church.
  3. Writing - I mean, why else am I writing a blog, right? I like to write and it does come quite naturally to me. Writing reviews and blog articles has been rewarding for me as a creative outlet.
  4. Teaching - If I'm completely honest, I'm questioning this one a little bit this week, since my co-op students seem to be struggling with the concepts we've worked on recently. But that glitch aside, I loved my years of teaching my kids at home, and love teaching classes at the co-op. And I've received enough positive feedback to believe that I'm doing a good job of teaching material and making it as enjoyable as possible for the students.
  5. Baking - I'm never going to go on that British bake-off show that my daughter binge-watches, or anything like it, but I can bake amazing bread and other desserts. Cooking isn't quite my thing, but baking, oh yes.
  6. Hospitality - I think that's the best thing to call it. I really enjoy having people over, arranging times to get together with people, and taking a hostess-type role at meetings. My party planning skills are only for very casual gatherings, and I don't think I've ever planned a bridal or baby shower or any other kind of party with planned games or activities, but getting a bunch of people together and feeding them and letting them just hang out and visit - I'm all about that. I like having a sort of open door policy at my house, so that friends (mine and my kids') feel welcome and at home any time.
  7. Connecting with People - Is laughing a talent? I'm not sure if it is, but I'm putting it here because I'm good at laughing and finding humor in all kinds of things. I'm not super outgoing, but I can visit with just about anybody and find something to converse with them about. I think I'm pretty good at connecting with my kids' friends and other teens and young adults.

Teaching. And coffee - I'm very good at coffee!
