Five Minute Friday - Breathe

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

just breathe
breathe on me Breath of God

********************

This old hymn came to mind, one that I haven't sung in many years, and yet I remembered it quite clearly. A reminder that it's the power - or breath - of a holy and loving God that gives new life and makes it possible for us to live the way he intended. Loving what he loves, obeying his Word, living godly lives.

According to the UMC Discipleship Ministries History of Hymns, the author of these words was Edwin Hatch (1835-1889), whose ministry included working the slums of East London and serving as vice-principal of St. Mary's College at Oxford. He was very well-educated, a scholar of classics and an authority on early church history. This hymn reflects his knowledge of Scripture as well as his own simple but profound faith.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love what thou dost love,
and do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until with thee I will one will,
to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
till I am wholly thine,
till all this earthly part of me
glows with thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
so shall I never die,
but live with thee the perfect life
of thine eternity.

~Edwin Hatch

Amen.

May I try my take on this, after a truly horrendous night?

Breathe on me, O mighty God,
life's thrown me for a loop,
and Your breath will not be flawed
if you had French onion soup.
Breath on me, O Holy Ghost,
there's tumours in my throat,
and I think I will be toast
if I don't get your vote.
Breathe on me, dear Jesus Christ,
whose death absolved my sins;
the place where You were sacriiced
is where new life begins.
Breathe on me, sweet Trinity
to make me man that I must be.
