Kennady got another art "commission" this Christmas season, and it's one that I think will probably translate into some extra credit for art.

(Last year, she was asked to do a live art presentation at the Christmas Eve service, and did a great job! See more at: Virtual Refrigerator - Christmas Eve Art and Middle School Monday - Christmas Eve Art Update.)

This year, she was given a big responsibility on short notice - the backdrop for the kids' Christmas play. The lady that was going to do it had some health concerns and wasn't able to do it, so Kennady was asked to step in. She listened to the director's instructions for what the backdrop should look like, and got to work on a design. It is supposed to represent looking out a window, perhaps in a high-rise, over a city skyline at night. Here's her rough draft:

Then we picked up the 8' by 10' canvas from the church and she spread it out on our living room floor (as much as she could anyway) and penciled all the outlines. She was working on the backside of a previous year's canvas.

I refused to help her with the math involved in figuring out the measurements and proportions. I figured it was good practice for her to do it on her own!

Another lady from church was already lined up to help with the painting, so we transported the canvas to the youth center so they had a large enough floor space to spread it all out. And a place where it could be left spread out and (hopefully!) undisturbed until the paint was dry.

These pictures were taken yesterday. Unfortunately, they found that the paint was being soaked up very quickly by the canvas, and they soon ran out of some of the colors they needed. They are at it again this afternoon, and Kennady even recruited another helper from our homeschool group. I'll be headed over to get the girls in a little while and see how the project is coming along. The dress rehearsal is tonight, and ideally the backdrop would have been ready for it. But with the day's delay to get more paint, that's doubtful. They may get it all painted today, but it won't likely be dry enough to hang.

I may have an updated picture on my Homeschool Weekly post tomorrow, and I am certainly planning on featuring the whole thing on the Virtual Refrigerator on Thursday!

Pretty big project for a freshman, don't you agree? Have your high schoolers surprised you by taking on a big project? Leave a comment and let me know!

Yes that is a big project! It looks like it's coming along really well. I can't wait to see the finished painting.
