Twenty-Six Lists - I Love a Good Story! #twentysixlists

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Homeschool Coffee Break helps fuel this blog - thank you!

Welcome to Twenty Six Lists! I hope you'll join me in using some fun List prompts for writing. Every other week I'll share a writing prompt and invite you to link up your list, and wherever the prompt takes you. You may want to simply make a list of five or ten items that answer the prompt, or you may elaborate on the items in your list, or even write an entire article. Be creative, and have fun!

Favorite Books. Well, I do love books, so this should be easy for me, right? Yes, and also no. I always have trouble listing favorites of anything, especially if I have to number the list. I just have too many favorites of some things, and I definitely have too many favorite books to narrow this list down. But as luck would have it, I took a Writing Prompt Challenge, and one of the prompts earlier this week was "story". So I wrote my little piece using that prompt - coming up in just a moment here - and I'm going to list a few favorite books that came to mind after writing.

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is an extra 10 Day Writing Prompt Challenge from Five Minute Friday. From March 2nd to March 11th, those of us who are taking part are aiming to write for five minutes each day on this set of prompts. Although I'm writing each day, I'm not publishing each day. This is what I wrote on Tuesday, Day Two, prompted by the word "story".

everyone loves a good story

I like to read, and I don't get to read nearly as much as I'd like, but I can easily get caught up in a good story and have trouble putting a good book down.

My favorite books tend to be historical fiction, and usually have a romance involved somehow. Maybe even a fairy tale quality. What's up with that? I'm a grown woman and happily married - why would I read fairy tales or romantic stories? I think the love of story is part of what makes us human, maybe even a part of the eternity that God has set in our hearts.

Jesus used stories to teach about the kingdom of God. God inspired the prophets to tell stories that emphasized warnings or promises. Throughout the Bible, God weaves together story after story of real people and nations to illustrate his love for his people. And they aren't all separate stories that have been collected into a compilation either. The stories and characters are related and reference each other and have repeating themes and threads that only make sense when we understand that God planned it all. It's all his story.

And I've noticed that a good story - especially a good romance or a classic fairy tale - very often draws upon those same themes. The noble prince or hero comes to rescue the princess because he loves her so much, and because that's his nature. She's reached the end of her resources and all is lost, but he will spend himself for her sake. It's not always the hero and the damsel in distress. Sometimes it's the lady that rescues him, or it's a parent and child, or siblings, or friends. But think about how many good stories involve a "hero" figure risking big time to "rescue" someone.

I love to see justice done, wrongs righted, the underdog win, true love conquer all, and I love to read about it. And in some sense, that reminds me that there will be justice, good will triumph over evil, and God's love can rescue anyone against all odds.

Thanks to Five Minute Friday for the prompts and the encouragement, as well as a link-up where we can share.

And so . . . in no particular order, a few of my favorite stories that somehow remind me of these themes of selfless love and redemption:

I loved Little Women. I too have a hard time narrowing down my list of favorite books... there are just so many of them.
