Five Minute Friday - Conclude

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

as we conclude . . .
one can only conclude

********************

Conclude: to bring to an end; finish; or terminate.

In a lot of ways, I'm ready for 2020 to conclude. Or at least for the negative and unhappy parts to conclude. The lockdowns need to conclude. Mask orders need to conclude. Fighting and fear-mongering, shaming and tattling need to conclude. Civil unrest needs to conclude.

The problem is that these things won't automatically conclude on Christmas morning or when we start a new calendar. Christmas spirit and a new year might put us in a hopeful frame of mind and help us see the need to change some of our behaviors. But we can only control our own behaviors, not the behaviors of others or the orders from authorities.

But we need to start somewhere.

Conclude: to arrive at an opinion or judgment; decide.

To get started, perhaps we need to conclude - decide, arrive at a judgment - that we each can do better. I've concluded that I can do better. By focusing on what I can do to make the world a better place, by holding fast to hope and living out faith, by praying more and fretting less. I've often failed, and I have no doubt that I'll fail again, but I've also concluded that my God never fails.

The world rolls on its merry way,
ignoring common sense,
but I have a better way;
I'll try to mend a fence
with whoever's on the other side,
although we disagree.
I do not have fears to hide;
he's not my enemy,
but someone who thinks otherwise
and in this, he is sincere;
though I won't try his thoughts for size,
I still can hold him dear
and in this find I can afford
to think him brother in the Lord.
