February's Art Challenge: Valentines or Birds
All this month, we'll be looking for artwork with the theme of Valentines, or artwork featuring Birds. February is the month of the Backyard Bird Count, if you're wondering how we chose that! While doing a little research for our Geography study, I also found that in Slovenia, folk tradition holds that St Valentine's Day is the day on which birds propose or marry. Please continue to share any art posts on our Virtual Fridge as well - we love seeing all of them!

It was a quiet week for art here, so I am  showing a couple things from the archives that go along with our monthly theme.

A hummingbird sketch from two years ago:

These birds are a Chinese papercut project from a co-op class several years ago, and I'm pretty sure it was during February too. This papercut project was from Geography Through Art.

And of course, a heart. This one was done a couple of months ago when Kennady was doodling and practicing shading techniques using chalk pastels.

Featured this week: this broken heart mended by love. Visit This Day Has Great Potential to see both parts of this artwork and leave a compliment for the artist.

Happy Valentine's Day!
Muse, bid the Morn awake!
Sad Winter now declines,
Each bird doth choose a mate;
This day's Saint Valentine's.
For that good bishop's sake
Get up and let us see
What beauty it shall be
That Fortune us assigns.
~Michael Drayton, Additonal Odes, To his Valentine.

You can grab the button above and add it to your post. Add your link here to share your child's art or your arts and crafts how-to posts. Please visit the other blogs and admire what's on their Virtual Refrigerators!

What a cool hummingbird sketch! I like the details. It is always fun watching them around our feeders. I'm ready for it to be warm enough for that again.

Neat papercuts! I'd like to try that someday. We got some amazing ones at a CNY event last weekend.
