Five Minute Friday - Spring

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

spring has sprung

********************

I don't do a whole lot of spring cleaning, despite my good intentions. I have little interest in gardening, so while many of my friends are excited about getting seedlings started and playing in the dirt for another season, I am happy with whatever plants are the least work for me to look after. We no longer have kids playing sports so I don't have to fit baseball practices into an already busy schedule.

And yet, the very fact that it IS spring does motivate me to tackle some spring cleaning and freshen things up. I may not be setting out bedding plants myself or tending my garden plot, but I am so excited to see the first crocuses, daffodils, and tulips bloom. And cherry blossoms and apple blossoms? Love them! The birds continue to gather around the feeders, and I keep an eye on previous nesting spots to see whether they will be home to a new brood. I don't follow sports very closely any more, but somehow spring training still catches my attention now and again, and I'll still keep an eye on the hockey season as it heads towards playoffs.

There's plenty to love about spring! Warmer weather, birds and flowers, wrapping up a school year, and more. It's all about the hope and promise of new things and renewed life. Somehow those crocuses come up each March, even though I don't even remember where they are. The birds find their way back to the northern parts of their range, which is quite an amazing feat of navigation and stamina. Grass and trees that were brown and dull turn green and vibrant. Which means someone will need to start mowing soon . . . but I digress. Spring comes without any help from me, and nothing I do stops it from coming. It might be an early spring or late, and it might come in like a lion or like a lamb, as the saying goes. But spring DOES come.

The world keeps turning, the sun keeps rising and setting, and the seasons continue. Springtime and harvest. And so they will continue until Jesus comes to take us home to heaven. Yes, there's so much that changes from year to year, and there are so many uncertainties and tragedies in our world. But God keeps his promises, and we can count on that. Spring is our reminder.

Let us acknowledge the LORD;
let us press on to acknowledge him.
As surely as the sun rises, he will appear;
he will come to us like the winter rains,
like the spring rains that water the earth.
~Hosea 6:3~

*******

Praise the LORD, my soul.
LORD my God, you are very great;
you are clothed with splendor and majesty.

He set the earth on its foundations;
it can never be moved.

He makes grass grow for the cattle,
and plants for people to cultivate -
bringing forth food from the earth:
wine that gladdens human hearts,
oil to make their faces shine,
and bread that sustains their hearts.

He made the moon to mark the seasons,
and the sun knows when to go down.

How many are your works, LORD!
In wisdom you made them all!

~from Psalm 104~

Enjoyed your thoughts on spring and the lovely photos accompanying them. I was in Kentucky for a week and just dazzled by the way the dogwood trees went from bare branches to full bloom in that length of time. I love dogwoods. And it occurred to me that it is because in full bloom they look like they are snow covered. And I LOVE SNOW!!

We're just passing from daffodils to tulip time here in the UK. But I think perhaps the little dwarf hyacinths may be my favourites.
God bless
