July Blogging Challenge - Summer Downtime

Summer Downtime is the theme for today's July Blogging Challenge. We do a little bit of homeschool during the summer, but we also have a lot more downtime than during the rest of the year. We finish up the studies that we weren't quite complete, put away what we're finished with, reorganize our books and supplies, and get started with new things. But all at a very relaxed pace!

This year, we have a pool again, although a smaller one than before. It's great to be able to cool down on hot summer days! I even went in yesterday for a bit.

The whole family seems to enjoy watching thunderstorms, and we often congregate on our (covered) front porch to watch the clouds and rain roll through, and the lightning flash.

We're not avid birdwatchers, but keep several feeders near our windows and the hubster and I particularly like watching the birds that gather. Usually we give the most attention to the hummingbird feeders, but this spring we placed this very homemade feeder outside our window and put the hummingbird feeders elsewhere. It didn't take long for a couple of sparrows to decide it would make a lovely home, so we've been watching them build their nest, hatch their babies and feed them. The youngsters seem to have left now.

I also love the unobstructed views we have of the night skies here. Summer evenings are perfect for looking at the moon and stars, identifying constellations, and even seeing the occasional meteor shower. Oh, and watching the fireflies try to compete.

Of course, summer downtime affords me a little more time for reading, and for extra cups of coffee. I'm enjoying an evening cup right now, in fact.
