Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.

Grab a cup of coffee and let's get started!

I'm so excited that the Washington Capitals will be going to the Stanley Cup Finals! But I don't have a Capitals mug, so this will have to be close enough for now.

Homeschool news  . . . I need to quickly clarify that my student was not a graduate this week. She's graduating next year. But graduation celebrations are the bookends to our week, and were a big part of the reason we didn't get a huge amount of schoolwork done this week! As a junior, Kennady is invited to serve at our homeschool group's commencement exercises, and with three of her best friends in the Class of 2018 it's pretty exciting and meaningful for her. And a little motivation as the juniors think ahead to their own chance to walk the stage next year. The ceremony is tonight, by the way.

I have been on the committee that plans and organizes the commencement for several years (seven, I think?) and it's probably my favorite "job" within the homeschool community. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't require a huge investment of my time to be a part of the planning meetings, and it's always a lot of fun to work with the grads and their parents to put together the ceremony. The biggest responsibility I have is to get the music together. We try to have two or three worship songs at the beginning of the ceremony, led by the graduating class. So there's the challenge of choosing songs that suit the occasion, and are well-liked and relatively well-known by the grads. And then figuring out some logistics of whether there are students in the grad class that can accompany, and practicing enough so that they are all comfortable with what we've decided. Some years we've had a large class with several musicians and have had a band of some sort to put together. This year we have only four students in the ceremony, and only one is a musician. He chose to play guitar, so I have the honour of playing piano for the worship music part of the ceremony.

Okay, so that's grad stuff. Now back to my student, the junior. She got her results from her French final and did quite well on it. She is still finishing up History and Algebra for this school year, and I imagine will be working on Algebra for most of the summer. Because she needs to finish it, and because I'd honestly rather she work on it some over the summer than to cram all the rest of it in by the end of the month and then not do any math at all until September. Turns out she also did quite a bit of art this week, as she worked on grad gifts for her friends.

Other news . . . Last Friday I dropped Kennady off at her best friend's place on my way to work. The two girls planned to spend the day together and then go to the Junior Senior Banquet in the evening. The friend's mom kindly supplied me with some pictures of the girls all ready to go. They had a fun evening, although the banquet was very sparsely attended compared to the last several years.

Saturday morning, bright and early - okay, it wasn't bright, but it was early - the hubster and I headed over to a friend's place to load up some firewood. They'd taken down some big trees on their property, so they told a few of us that if we wanted firewood, we could have it if we came over and loaded it up. Oh, and it was a lovely day for it too. Cold and rainy and miserable. I was soaked to my knees before we'd been there five minutes. Plus there were worms under many of the chunks of wood, so I cried a lot. But we've got a good stack of firewood to stack and use come fall.

Landon was away all weekend, so Sunday was rather quiet. Kennady and I did attend a grad/going away party for one of guys from our homeschool group who just graduated college. Things started getting back to normal on Monday, except that I came home from work SICK. Like whooping cough sick or something. It was not good. Have spent the week trying to recover, with mixed results, and that explains why I've been scarce on the blogs this week! Too busy and just not healthy enough to care that much.

Tuesday evening was the grad rehearsal. Kennady came with me to rehearsal so she could spend a little time with her friends, and it was probably good that I didn't have to drive all by myself! Because I was functional but really not feeling well. Cold meds, coffee, and adrenaline got me through the evening! I was feeling much better on Wednesday and Thursday, but was still worn out by what little I did on both days. Wednesday was a year-end review and Kennady's guitar lesson. Thursday was Kennady's driving instruction and errands in town and then worship team practice in the evening.

What I Loved This Week . . . despite it being a hectic week and not feeling well for most of it, I did love all the preparation for grad. And just music in general. Being able to get together with talented family and friends to play music - especially music that glorifies God! - is always a highlight for me.

I recommend . . . visiting the Homeschool Review Crew blog for the Crafts and Experiments and Projects, Oh My! Round-up today. You should be able to find a wide range of ideas for hands-on fun for kids of all ages as the Crew members share some of their favorites.

On my blogs last week . . .

Just A Second is where I share book reviews and other book-related things, and update on what's on my bookshelf. Last week I finished As Death Draws Near (A Lady Darby Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber, and reviewed it this week. And this week I finished and reviewed No Less Days by Amanda G. Stevens, and I've been reading:

The Accidental Guardian by Mary Connealy
The Captured Bride: Daughters of the Mayflower - book 3 by Michelle Griep

A parting shot . . . This was what I featured on the Virtual Fridge this week. And boy, do I wish I had time right now to just put my head down and sleep like this!
