Five Minute Friday - Loud

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

it's too loud
not loud enough

It's only too loud if it's a sound you don't want to hear. I know that's not quite true, or not all the time. but I don't mind "loud" at all if it's music I like, or fireworks, or happy sounds like laughter. If I'm listening to someone speaking or watching a movie or show, I want it to be loud enough so that I don't miss anything.

Obviously there are many times and places where quieter is better, and a holy hush shouldn't be interrupted.

Just like the sound guy I trust to mix our worship team on Sunday mornings, the balance needs to be just right. One part shouldn't drown out the others. The lead voice or instrument needs to heard clearly but not overpower the rest. It needs to be loud enough to be heard easily but not so loud that it's painful or annoying. It needs to be loud enough to exude confidence and inspire participation, but not so loud that it's distorted or seems like showing off.

Our voices and our lives need to to be equalized and balanced the same way. Speaking and living bold truth, but not being offensive or rude. Our voices need to be heard, but we need to not shout down everyone else. Loud enough to be leaders and encouragers.

I have a pretty loud voice, both singing and speaking, and I tend to laugh out loud. I try to tone it down when it should be quieter, but I don't always get it right. Amplify what's good and right, be clear about truth, but honor the holy hush.

"It's only too loud if it's a sound you don't want to hear." This is, perhaps, the best observation I read today.

Ah...balance. It really is key to so much, isn't it? Trying to balance my words - when to speak, what to say and how loudly should I say them - has been quite the challenge lately!
