Homeschool Mother's Journal: In Which We Get Our Money's Worth

Formerly titled "Weekly Wrap-Up" but for the summer, I think I'll just link to the journal...

In our homeschool this week... we "started" the week on Saturday evening by attending a cookout to celebrate the end of our homeschool year. Our umbrella group has just finished its first year under a new director, and this end-of-year get-together was a first time idea. I think everyone who attended enjoyed it - I know we did! - so it looks like a good start to a new tradition for our group.

I am a reviewer for our umbrella group, so I have all my year-end reviews scheduled for this week and next. I did a review on Tuesday, and met with my reviewer on Wednesday.   I was going to do a review on Wednesday afternoon, but circumstances forced me to reschedule that one.

In other news... on Sunday we enjoyed Children's Day at church, with a Sunday School program and the annual Sunday School picnic.

Kennady played an angel this year

Wednesday morning I attended planned to attend a prayer and Bible study group with several other homeschool moms. I did make it there, but I was kept busy with another issue and so missed most of the study time. Thankfully I did get there for our time in prayer. Especially thankful because the distraction that kept me from participating in the study was van trouble. Just as I pulled into the parking lot where we were meeting, my van started smoking and the steering became just a bit tight as I eased into a parking spot. Sure enough, my power steering fluid was draining out of a hole in the hose. After years of paying for AAA membership, I am using it this year. *sigh* I had it towed to a garage where they later confirmed our suspicion and commenced repair work. On the one hand I'm grouchy because it's not like we've got money lying around that we don't know what to do with, y'know? But as usual, we remember that it could have been worse, and that we can actually consider ourselves blessed in the circumstances. This might have happened while driving on a highway, or far from friends and help. It might have happened while Harrison was driving to work. (There's a thought to give me nightmares!)

Got the van back on Friday afternoon. Friday evening DH and I took Kennady with us to a barbecue festival. Mmmmmm..... we love barbecue!!! Then a stop at the brand new grocery store on the way home turned out to be a field trip of sorts. I found out earlier in the week that some of my friends had never heard of Wegman's and I had tried to describe it, but once we were in the store last night I figured I could just take some pictures and blog about it! LOL We were so excited to find cheese curds in the store that I immediately posted a photo of our lucky find to facebook. Pork products and cheese curds on the same night - it doesn't get any better than that, folks. Well, I guess if they'd had Tim Horton's coffee...

My favorite thing this week was... barbecue, of course!

On the Bookshelf...

  • Emma by Jane Austen

  • The Lost Shipwreck of Paul by Robert Cornuke

Finished Grace in thine Eyes by Liz Curtis Higgs. I've got a couple other books I had been reading, but since I didn't work on them this week, I left them off the list.

A Parting Shot...

Argh! Van trouble! Repairs are always expensive, but it IS important to look on the bright side of things - you didn't break down with a van-full of kids in 90 degree heat, right? ;)

K is adorable as an angel!

Jessy - good point about the 90degree heat scenario being worse!

Hi Kelli - thanks for visiting!

Stef - I like the way you put it, being sorry I got my money's worth. LOL

I just realized I haven't visited you for a while!

Kennady looks so sweet all dolled up.

We've been dithering about getting CAA (the Canadian version of AAA). We used to have it and hardly ever used it.... But perhaps we should get it for our upcoming vacation. I'll mention it to my husband.

Blessings,

Annie Kate

PS I might take Emma along on holidays.
