An Airshow Photojournal

A is for Airshow.  The Atlantic Canada International Airshow, to be more specific.

One of the adventures we had on our recent vacation to the Maritimes was a day spent at the Atlantic Canada International Airshow.  This was something the hubster really wanted to do, and the rest of us honestly weren't that enthused.  The kids would have rather done a lot of other things, but we didn't give them the choice.  We figured that it wouldn't hurt them, and at least part of the reason they didn't look forward to it was that they didn't know what to expect.  I wasn't too sure what to expect either, and I was glad to find out that it was more fun and interesting than I'd anticipated!

On Friday evening, there was a free preview in which some of the planes performed over the harbor in Summerside.  The highlight of this event came after it was dark.  A glider and a WWII training airplane put on a fireworks show!  They had fireworks on the wings - what essentially looked like giant sparklers.  It was really hard to get pictures, as you might imagine.

The airshow went for two days, and we chose to attend on Saturday.

First up, the Canadian Forces Skyhawks Parachute Demo Team.

The CF-18 Demo Team, Royal Canadian Air Force Single Jet Demo Team.

"Grey Ghost One", Robert Hampton Gray Goodyear FG-1D Corsair

"Hawk One" Discovery Air, Canadair F-86 (CL-13) Sabre 5

During breaks in the show, we checked out some of the display aircraft and other things.  Kennady learned a little about how gliders work and got to try one out.

Kennady and Dad both checked out the Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter.

There was even a falcon!

Look, I caught Spencer watching the aerobatics. He claims he slept through most of it.  LOL

Most of it was loud enough that I don't think he could have slept that much.  Especially the jets.  In fact, during the Blue Angels show, one jet came in behind us while we were all watching the other jets on the team fly in formation ahead of us, and startled almost everyone.  Kennady instantly melted into this puddle of jelly wrapped around Dad's legs.  Hilarious!

It was pretty cool to see the Blue Angels though!  I think this was the only air show outside of the USA that they performed this year, and the Atlantic Canada International Airshow is one of only two airshows in the world to also host the RCAF Snowbirds, so I guess it's big deal.

I was just a bit partial to the Snowbirds, the Royal Canadian Air Force Demo Team.
If you're interested in learning more about the performers at the airshow, check out the links I included above, also In the Air: Performers; and for information about the displays, check out On the Ground: Static Aircraft.  I'm pretty sure there are WAY better pictures if you click through some of those links as well!

Oh, and did I mention that Tim Hortons was a major sponsor of the airshow? And also a major sponsor of our family vacation this year!
Me and the Kym-sized Tim Hortons coffee! ;-)
Have you ever been to an airshow?  What did you think?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Looks like a lot of fun! I saw the Blue Angels as a kid and would love to share that experience with my kids, but it can be hard to find a good air show around here these days.

I'm more willing to go to airshows from now on, now that I know how much fun it can be. But they're not usually cheap either!

We went to the Cleveland Air Show on Sept 3, which we saw them, as well as, I thought, a Canadian CF-18 but I don't see it on their schedule page. Eh, well, whateva!:) It was fun either way!
