Homeschool Mother's Journal: In Which We Get Tuned Up

Later today my parents are arriving for a visit.  So for the next two weeks, I will probably be scarce in the blogosphere. 8-)

In our homeschool... schoolwork took a bit of a backseat to other concerns this week.  I had thought we would really work hard on schoolwork and get "ahead" so that we could take it easy while grandparents were here, but after I looked at the week's schedule, I figured that might not work out like I'd hoped.  Between meetings, gym class, shopping trips, and some extra time spent cleaning the house, we did work on history and a little bit of science, and each of the kids did some work in their individual studies.

Our history lessons were from the Jacksonian era of American history, which included Davy Crockett, the Alamo, and the Trail of Tears.

In other news... the oldest two boys had their birthdays on the weekend.  Harrison had to work so he has put off his big celebration until sometime next week, when his grandparents are here.  Spencer prefers his celebrations to be very low-key so he chose to have a couple friends over on Monday evening.

Sunday afternoon Landon worked at the WWII Bomber Fly-in for Civil Air Patrol again.  DH and I both went and spent a couple hours in the afternoon looking at the planes and visiting for awhile with one of the pilots there.  There aren't very many WWII veterans around any more, and we were privileged to meet one of the pilots who flew a lot of missions in Europe during the war.  He had written a book about his experiences and my hubby purchased it.  It was really interesting to see the planes, and who would have thought it, but I guess we're easing our way into the airshow subculture, if there is such a thing! LOL

The other big news was from Monday as well - Kennady finally got her guitar!

What's working/not working for us... Guitar lessons look like they will be working.  But piano lessons really haven't been working.

Thoughts/questions I have... I'm trying to anticipate how much schoolwork I should reasonably expect to get done while my parents are here.  We want to try to stick to our routine where possible, but obviously we also want to relax and be able to just have fun together!

One of my favorite things this week... Kennady getting her guitar. She was so happy!

A parting shot...

Loved the picture about 80's bands. I haven't read anything by Phillpa Carr in a very long time. I used to read them a lot. Right now I am reading a strange book called The Rook by Daniel JT O'Malley. It's like Men in Black meets Harry Potter.

Hi! I'm visiting from the Homeschool Mother's Journal link-up. That is cool that your son is involved in Civil Air Patrol! None of my kids have been interested in it thus far, much to my chagrin. My youngest is only 4, so I'm holding out for her. I would have killed for such an opportunity when I was younger!

I love comments! It's like visiting over a virtual cup of coffee.
