In our homeschool... This week we went back to a full day schedule for school, or close to it. We're still adjusting to getting up and started on time consistently, and don't have all our subjects going yet. Both Landon and Kennady found themselves dozing off while reading more than once this week, so I've been suggesting (I may have to up that to insisting) that they go to bed earlier and maybe do more of their schoolwork sitting up rather than in bed!

They are both off to a great start with Science. The way it's scheduled has them reading a chapter one day and doing the chapter worksheet and quiz the next day, but they are doing it all in one day. So it works out to be an hour and a half or so two days a week rather than about 45 minutes each on three or four days a week. We'll see if they continue that pace. That is totally up to them.

Both are working on math and grammar. Landon worked on Drafting and Percussion, and is ready to start American History next week I think. I thought Kennady might start Geography this week, but we put that off so she could finish up with the book about C.S.Lewis she's been reading and work on a few projects from the accompanying Unit Study. Both are from YWAM Publishing and we'll be reviewing them in a couple weeks. (Other upcoming reviews we are working include: Stinky Kid Math, games from USAopoly, and Fast Transcripts) She will start Geography next week, along with Brit Lit, and maybe even Health. Not sure I'll have her add all three during a week shortened by Labour Day.

We meant to start Composition this week as well - we will work through the Student Writing Intensive from Institute for Excellence in Writing - but I couldn't find the one disc with the lessons! I put out a call to local homeschool friends to arrange to borrow one if ours didn't show up in a timely manner, and then Spencer located it for me. But by that time I decided we would just start next week instead of crowding it into this week.

With all my last minute lesson planning, my carefully organized crate of schoolbooks wound up rather jumbled, so I'm making sure it's put back to rights this weekend, and maybe even cleaning up my desk a bit as well.

In other news... Landon was promoted to Chief Master Sergeant at Civil Air Patrol on Tuesday. I didn't take pictures (I opted to pin him instead) but I haven't got pictures from anyone else yet.

Of course the one picture I took while he was in formation, he had his eyes closed. Oh well.

Landon also had a session with a driving instructor on Wednesday, and I loaded up with groceries during that time. Wednesday evening I went to a youth leader meeting at church, and then worship team practice. We have one more Wednesday evening free before the fall programs kick off at church.

I received another bowlful of Concord grapes from a friend, so that meant another session of making grape jelly. Who knew that I would become such a Suzy Homemaker? Ha! Just kidding, I figured out how to can jelly and will probably try more small scale canning, but I'm no Suzy Homemaker.

Yesterday we had the honor of attending a memorial service for a wonderful godly man who passed away very unexpectedly this week. We and many others were blessed to know him; and we pray for comfort for his wife and family as they go through the grieving process.

Things that made me smile... this goofy outfit that Kennady devised and wore to school a couple days this week. This isn't exactly the "first day of Grade 9" picture I would have preferred! I guess I'll have to convince her and Landon to allow me to take at least a couple of nice pictures that will be more official.

On the bookshelf...

Murther and Walking Spirits by Robertson Davies

I finished The Suspicion at Sanditon by Carrie Bebris and reviewed it here. You can also find other book-related posts on my book blog, Just A Second.

A parting shot...

My school market basket looks much like yours after our first week of school! I'm working on a bit of organization, as well.
