Ham and Swiss Dip Bread Bowl

Ham and Swiss Dip Bread Bowl - a recipe on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com #recipe

Yeah, I know I don't often share recipes here, and it's rare that I share one that's not related to what we're studying, but this bread bowl full of cheesy goodness was such a winner that I really had to spread the word. I had a feeling it was going to be awesome and took a few pictures as I was putting it together, which I hardly ever do, and that premonition paid off.

The whole family loved this, and it was unanimously decided that I should make it for football viewing parties and pretty much any other time I feel like it. In other words, they like it and will eat it regularly. Good to know.

And to think that I tried it because I had a big chunk of Swiss cheese to use up!

Ham and Swiss Dip Bread Bowl

2 large round loaves of bread, unsliced (French, Italian, or Sourdough)

8 oz. cream cheese, softened
8 oz. sour cream
8 oz. mayonnaise
1/2 package ranch-style dressing mix
onion powder and/or garlic powder
1 lb. ham, diced (thick deli ham or leftover baked ham)
5-6 oz. Swiss cheese, shredded

Combine the cream cheese, sour cream, mayo, dressing mix and seasoning. Stir in the ham and Swiss cheese.

Hollow out one of the loaves of bread. Put the dip inside the hollow and place it on a large sheet pan to catch any overflow. Bake at 350 for about an hour.

Cube the bread removed to make the hollow, and the second loaf of bread. Toast in the oven for 7-10 minutes and serve with the dip. You can also use crackers or veggies with the dip.

I used sourdough bread, and only had one loaf. I decided to put some of the dip in a small casserole to bake alongside the bread bowl, and that turned out great. We used the toasted bread cubes (which I just added to the cookie sheet during the last 10 minutes of bake time), crackers, and celery to shovel the dip into our mouth. Yummy! We even considered naming it the Ham and Swiss Super Bread Bowl.
