A couple weeks ago in
From the High School Lesson Book - Eastern Europe I mentioned that we hoped to try our hand at a folk art from Poland called
wycinanki. Well, it took until this week before we got it done, but we did try it! If you can cut a paper snowflake, you can do
wycinanki, at least a simple version of it. This folk art became popular in Poland in the 1800s when poorer people couldn't afford art to decorate their homes. Instead they made their own paper cut designs and it became an art form in its own right. There are two kinds of
wycinanki, the kind done on a solid color paper and the kind done with different colored papers layered on each other. We tried the solid color version. Paper is cut into a design - traditional motifs are birds, trees, chickens, and flowers - on a fold, so that the finished design is symmetrical.
To save us some work, I printed templates for us to follow. (I found them at
DLTK.) There was a simple rooster, which we used as our refresher in scissor skills!

Then we moved on to a more detailed tree and rooster design.

We also tried a related paper-cutting craft, also from Poland, called
gwiazdy, which means "stars". We know them as paper snowflakes! Just fold a square of paper into quarters, then in half on the diagonal, draw a symmetrical geometric design and cut it out. (I think when we make snowflakes, we usually fold the paper twice on the diagonal, and the design is six-sided when unfolded - does that sound right? So the
gwiazdy is a little bit different in that it's eight-sided.) So if you're looking for a simple craft that even the littlest kids can do, but you've had enough of snowflakes for the season, just fold your paper a little differently and give it a new name!

The initial ideas for this craft came from one of our favorite books
Geography Through Art, and I found other info and templates by searching the internet. Simple instructions and templates are available at
DLTK.)
