The Summer of Landon - A Baseball Photojournal

Last week we were on vacation. And not just any vacation, but the long anticipated Summer of Landon vacation! When our kids graduate high school, we like to let them have a big say in choosing our summer vacation. (See my post The Summer of Landon for the background.) Landon wanted to see some Major League Baseball in other cities, and to visit Cedar Point. After checking schedules (ours and those of the teams!) and figuring out a route and budget, we decided on a road trip that took us to Columbus to visit our oldest son, to Cleveland and Pittsburgh for baseball games, to Cedar Point, and to southern Ontario to visit family and to see a baseball game in Toronto. This collection of photos relates to the baseball part of our trip.

There's no major league team in Columbus, but the minor league Columbus Clippers have a great stadium and lots of fans. Our oldest son Harrison lives in Columbus and suggested we all go to a Clippers game.

It rained a little at the beginning of the evening, but thankfully it was just a drizzle. The clouds sure looked threatening though.

We had seats way down the third base line, where the visiting team's pitchers warmed up - they were playing the Toledo Mud-Hens.

It was super-hero night or some such thing, so we were entertained by the scoreboard. Specifically this image of Aqua-man, who we've always thought was the lamest super-hero, but in his cartoon days he certainly didn't look like this!

The Clippers won, and there were fireworks after the game!

Had to take the official Summer of Landon pictures at the ball park.

The next day we were in Cleveland to see the Indians take on the Toronto Blue Jays.

This was the view from our seats - great view of the whole field, but pretty high up in the stands! There were a lot of Jays fans in attendance, and our team held the lead through most of the game, but the hometown Indians rallied late and got the win. It was a close game though, so a great one to watch.

Next ballgame was in Pittsburgh. For this one, Landon chose seats in the outfield corner at the end of the foul line, but not one of us had thought to bring along a ball glove! Fortunately (??), none of the foul balls came near enough to us to put us at risk. The visiting team was the Astros, and it was another close and exciting game, with the Astros ultimately getting the win.

And finally, on Friday evening, we took in a ballgame at Rogers Centre in Toronto, with the Blue Jays hosting the Minnesota Twins. This is a huge stadium, but seats were pretty hard to find - at least four together in a price range we were okay with! We wound up sitting really high up and in the outfield.

From our seats, we couldn't really see the outfield wall that was basically under us, which wasn't a big deal, but that's where the home run balls were going on that night! We could see the outfielders kind of give up on it, and we knew it was going out. A great game for us to watch other than that little thing, because the Jays won handily, and there were plenty of home runs. Also, both teams made frequent calls to the bullpen, so we saw a lot of pitchers.

Looks like fun! I have never been to any sort of professional or semi-professional ball game.
