Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.

Grab a cup of coffee and let's get started!

Homeschool news  . . . That's right - at last we've officially started school for the year! My records will show that Tuesday was our first day, although we even did a little school on Monday, and of course there are things we worked on during the summer break. We chose Tuesday as Day One because it was the first rehearsal for Children's Chorus and all the public schools in our area were back in session that day as well. Kennady went back to guitar lessons on Wednesday. Thursday was an important First Day, as we started academic co-op classes. Kennady is taking French, Non-fiction Writing, and Speech/Presentation at the co-op, and believe it or not, I'm the Writing instructor. First day of classes went really well, although we had a bit of an adventure before we could leave the house in the morning. More about that in a moment though . . .

Writing with Sharon Watson Review

At home (because we're homeschooling, after all!) she worked on Algebra and Lit and a few odds and ends. We'll add World History starting next week. Or that's what I was planning. I'm willing to leave that another week before starting if it helps her ease in. (I haven't told her that yet! So shhhh . . . ) Just looking to keep up the pace and not get too behind before we're even through the first month!

Other news . . . Last weekend was rainy and cool, so not a lot of fun to be had. The church had planned a yard sale on Saturday but with the rain it had to be moved indoors and I don't think there was much traffic. Kennady and I did some shopping and errands on Saturday morning. The hubster smoked a brisket on Saturday evening, so we had that deliciousness to eat on Sunday and Monday, but other than we stayed home and didn't do anything of note.  Landon went boating with friends on Monday but the rest of us just stayed home and relaxed.

Kennady was back to Children's Chorus on Tuesday evening, and that included her first experience as an intern. She had a couple of "not sure how to handle this" moments, but that's to be expected. She had a good time overall and is looking forward to the season. Her first guitar lesson of the year went very well also.

We had the truck in the shop on Wednesday to get brakes done, so we've had to be a little creative with vehicles again this week. Fortunately Landon was able to carpool to his job sites every day except today so it worked fairly well. But on Thursday after I got home from dropping him with his ride, our car had a flat tire! Needless to say, that has caused the need for even more vehicle creativity!

What's New . . . A new year of Children's Chorus, a new year of guitar lessons, and a brand new homeschool co-op! All three started out very well! We've got new brakes on the truck and soon we'll have new tires on the car, but those aren't quite as exciting thanks to the unexpected need for them and the cost involved!

Funny, Flop, or Fail of the Week . . .  Our fail of the week was clearly our effort to get to our first day of co-op classes on time. Granted, there wasn't much we could do about it, but still. On Thursday morning I dropped Landon off with his ride to work and got back home about 5:30am. I quickly washed my hair and did a couple things to prepare for the day, but felt like I had enough time to lie down again for a little bit before driving the hubster to work for 7am. And at ten of seven, when we went out the door, lo and behold, we had an almost completely flat tire! I was very sure I hadn't hit a pothole or driven across any place where I was likely to pick up a nail, but there it was.  And I did not have time to deal with it!! I woke Spencer up to see if he could help me change the tire, and used his car to drive the hubster to work. Unfortunately the tire change was not going smoothly or quickly, so I wound up going back to get the hubster so the two guys could change the tire, and then Kennady and I used Spencer's car to go to co-op and let him use mine (once the spare was on) so he could go to work, since he had a little more time before he needed to be there.

Now in the end, we were only about 10 minutes late to class, which is pretty amazing considering the delay!! (And I may or may not have viewed speed limits in some places as guidelines rather than actual rules) But on the first day!! I hated it. Made me feel a little flustered and ill-prepared even though I had done everything to prepare for my class the day before. Anyway, with any luck at all, we'll not have snags like that every week!

I'm sharing this Fail in the weekly link-up called Friday Funnies, Flops, & Fails hosted by Doodlemom's Homeschooling Life.

On my blogs last week . . .

And on my book blog, Just A Second:

Wordless Wednesday - First Day
Teaser Tuesday/First Chapter First Paragraph - Beyond All Dreams
What I'm Reading - September 4, 2017
Scripture and a Snapshot - Better Is One Day

Just A Second is where I share book reviews and other book-related things, and update on what's on my bookshelf. This week I finished Beyond All Dreams by Elizabeth Camden and will review it soon, and I've been reading:

The Princess Spy by Melanie Dickerson
Lady Susan by Jane Austen

A parting shot . . . this is what my new chalkboard mug looked like at the beginning of the week when my hubby discovered it and wanted to make a point about my obsession with Tim Hortons coffee mugs!

I love the note he left you on the mug! I must admit, I wonder where you keep them all, we have maybe 3 or 4 mugs total and they are special ones for Amber's hot chocolate.

Hopefully your co-op day next week goes smoother. Car trouble is so hard to plan around and the last minute nature makes it always inconvenient. I'd be so flustered if that happened to me on the first day of co-op.

OH I hate that feeling! I get so flustered when I'm late even with a perfectly good excuse.. I'll never forget the year I was working at our local school as a sub. and I had a flat tire. Called the secretary to let her know I was going to be a few minutes late... no joke a week later I had another flat with another tire. I felt sure they must not have believed me when I called with the second flat in under two weeks. Needless to say at that point I just replaced all 4 tires.

I hate being late! I love your mug! I used to have too many and now I have just the right number. Looks like you had a decent week even with the car trouble. We also had car trouble this week so maybe there was something in the air

my mug collection became smaller this week with a candle making day by the lad. :) It's good to keep the collection down, you can only use so and so many. :) I'm glad you had a good first week.

Sounds like a good first week - except for the flat tire andbeign late that is.

Car troubles are always annoying. I am glad yours didn't delay you for long.

Ugh! what a way to start your co-op year. Glad though it happened where it did instead of stranding you further from home.
