Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.
Homeschool news . . . At this point, we're just doing our best to stay somewhat focused and keep up until the holiday break. The schedule is very full, so there have been times when Kennady either forgot about an assignment or procrastinated or left something incomplete because of holiday interruptions. And then had to scramble to finish up on time. Now that I think about it . . . I had the same thing happen to me. 'Tis the season!
Other news . . . Friday evening was quiet because it was just me and the hubster and Spencer at home. Kennady went to a friend's place and I opted to pick up pizza for dinner. The hubster and I putzed around with decorations for a bit before calling it 'good enough' for this year. We are getting very lazy about decorating! It's hard to find time to get it done all at once, and we somehow lack some motivation too.
On Saturday morning I picked Kennady up and we went to a small party and did a bit of shopping. In the evening all five of us piled in the car and went to Hershey for a hockey game! We'd pulled together some friends from church and from the hubster's work to get group tickets.
I enjoyed a pretty lazy Sunday afternoon, and napped longer than I should have while Kennady was at a birthday party. In the evening, she went with me to a live nativity presentation at a friend's church, and then I dropped her off at hockey. It was the last night of the season for hubby's Old Fat Bald Guys league, and the playoff games, but unfortunately his team didn't win this time around.
On Tuesday morning, my week took a turn for the worse as I had a sudden onset of severe back pain shortly after getting up. I managed to get everyone off to work okay, but I was in so much pain that I opted to head for the urgent care clinic after lunch. My original thought was an infection of some kind but that seemed to be ruled out, and the doctor recommended anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant medication for my back and sacroiliac. Thankfully we were able to make other arrangements for Kennady to get to chorus rehearsal that evening, and I called out of work for Wednesday. We had worship team practice on Wednesday evening, and I managed okay; and made it through co-op on Thursday as well. The last couple of days have ranged from horrible pain to uncomfortable but functional. A follow-up visit with my doctor is obviously necessary, and hopefully can be jammed into the schedule sooner rather than later.

And who wouldn't want to hang out with this attractive family, am I right?! Could we possibly be any goofier? I think not. |

Oh, and I had a couple of stops planned on the way home from co-op, but things didn't go quite as planned. Since my back was feeling pretty good at that point, I stopped at a friend's for our standing coffee date, although I expected it to be just a short visit. However, when we tried to leave, the car battery was stone dead! We tried jump starting with my friend's vehicle, and with her husband's vehicle - no success. So I figured that's what AAA membership was for and called for assistance. Even though we were in the city and it was decent weather, we still waited over an hour for a truck to come and get my car started again. By that time, Landon had volunteered to drive out and pick Kennady up to go to their young adult activity - what a nice big brother! - and I had zero interest in making either of the stops I'd originally planned. One was the bank, which was no longer an option anyway. And I gave up on attending a church social myself. I'd been iffy because of my back so it was probably just as well.
What I'm Highlighting . . . On the Homeschool Review Crew blog today, you'll find a round-up of Our Favorite Christmas Books from Crew members. I was planning to share my own list, but then that whole thing with my back happened. So instead, I shared a previous list of favorites: Holiday Bookshelf and invite you to hop over and see the rest of the contributions.
One book I'm adding to my list this year is The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry.

I recommend . . . some favorite holiday sweets recipes I shared a couple of years ago: Holiday Sweets and Treats. I had grand plans again this year to start holiday baking right around Thanksgiving and thought that if I spread it out and did something every day that I had time, I'd have a nice selection of homemade treats available. Nope. Ain't nobody got time for that. Or, I haven't made time yet. I still have about a week to go - but now I have back problems. But we need Peppernuts for sure, and also shortbread and butter tarts. Wish me luck!
On my blogs last week . . . things were very slow, thanks to the hectic pace and interruptions of the rest of my life!
And on my book blog, Just A Second:
What I'm Reading - December 10, 2018
Scripture and a Snapshot - Prince of Peace
Just A Second is where I share book reviews and other book-related things, and update on what's on my bookshelf. This week I've been reading:
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
A parting shot . . . I sent a couple of books as a St Nicholas Day gift for my granddaughter. Here she is reading her new Grinch storybooks. 💗
