Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.

Grab a cup of coffee and let's get started!

Homeschool news  . . . In our homeschool, things went along pretty much as usual this week, except that I don't think Kennady did much Consumer Math. Oh wait - that is pretty much as usual! I definitely need to keep reminding her of that and hopefully we'll get it worked into the weekly routine so it doesn't get missed. One of the academic goals she set for herself (in the Victus Study Skills System) involves prioritizing that course, so that should help.

Something else that should help is the college plan I referred to in the title. On Monday Kennady and I went to the community college for their President's Day Open House, and it was a great motivator! Kennady has been reluctant to take any action on making college plans (comes from anxiety about the unknown - I get it!) and her dad and I haven't pushed like maybe we should have either (also partly because it's uncharted territory for us, I think). I insisted on the Open House, and even took the day off work to make sure she got there, and it paid off. Seeing the college, hearing from the presenters, and talking to some faculty helped us get over some worries, and gave us some deadlines and motivation for decisions. Kennady has chosen a direction to begin her studies, and the applications and enrollment process is well under way! I don't know how much she wants me to share at this point, but I think it's safe to say that she's planning to start out with a double major in Music and Psychology.

A motivational quote from the Victus Study Skills student book that seemed
very appropriate!

Wednesday was a snow day for almost everyone, but it was a good opportunity for me and Kennady to get a good handle on our co-op subjects and make sure the homework and grading was all caught up. On Thursday morning, we decided that it would be best if the co-op followed a two-hour delay schedule because the parking lot and sidewalks were still icy. Of course we put the students to work helping with that! And it was pajama day too!

In my Writing class we finished up the chapter focusing on some literary devices - like parrallelism, illustrated well by quotes from Dr. Seuss!

And then we started talking about Themes. We're watching the movie WALL*E in class and paying attention to the possible themes in that movie.

In my History class, we talked about the Roaring 20s and the beginning of the Depression. Among the video clips I used in that class, we enjoyed some clips from the first 'talkie' moving picture, The Jazz Singer; and had some fun watching a little bit of a documentary on Babe Ruth. We spent the last part of the class time watching and listening to George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, as it was portrayed in Disney's Fantasia 2000.

Other news . . . We had a rather quiet weekend since Kennady was away at Winter Retreat with the youth group. The hubster and I went out for our Valentine's dinner on Friday evening, and on Saturday we did some work in the dining room and kitchen before going out to do some shopping.

Our family dinners continued to entertain this week, as I kept up the new tradition of posting a picture on Facebook!

One of the family dinners and game nights replaced our midweek activities at church, since the snow day caused an automatic cancellation. We also didn't have our worship team practice that we'd normally do on the same evening.

What's Working . . . thankfully, our co-op classes did work out this week! We had snow and other messy winter weather all day Wednesday, causing school closings and therefore church activities were cancelled. Although the weather was no longer an issue by Thursday morning, there was still a lot of ice, and we thought we might need to take a snow day from co-op because of it. We finally decided that we could do a two-hour delay and still fit in all our classes! I only wish I'd been able to get an extra two hours of sleep!

Something else that's been working, in my opinion, is the Victus Study Skills System that we're reviewing. Although it's not easy for me and Kennady to find time together to work through it, I've seen that the focus on improving her study skills is paying off. Our review is coming up during the first week in March!

I recommend . . . Checking out all the great articles members of the Homeschool Review Crew have shared for this month's Homeschool Collection {Second Edition}!

On my blogs last week . . .

Scripture and a Snapshot - Love Deeply, Offer Hospitality

Just A Second is where I share book reviews and other book-related things, and update on what's on my bookshelf. This week I've been reading:

Kind Is the New Classy: The Power of Living Graciously by Candace Cameron Bure
Ladies of Intrigue by Michelle Griep

A parting shot . . . At the church where we have our co-op, we found some icicles that could be rotated on the railing!

Oh how exciting to see the college in person. I had a double major in education and psychology.. I found the psychology classes so interesting and ended up dropping the education part until I went back for my masters.

We hit up the local college this past week as well! They offer Music Worship and Biblical Psychology at the one here, if Kennady is interested in variety of school choices ;-) My oldest daughter was nervous about committing as well. It is a big decision!

it will be good to see the review of Victus. I'm a bit curious about it.

I never thought about how many different careers there are in music! That is a really neat list for those with musical inclinations.
