Some of the things around the web that I've been reading or exploring during recent coffee breaks:
- I came across this article from Crew member Kelly on her blog Hope In the Chaos, and it echoes what I usually think when I see or hear questions about curriculum and academics from moms who are homeschooling little children: Dear Mom, Let Them Be Little When someone asks what's the best curriculum for any child Kindergarten age and younger, my answer is "Legos. Crayons. Games. Dolls. Toy trucks." Let them play. And all the way through primary grades, let them be kids.
- Of course, now that my kids are NOT little, I'm finding myself reading blog like Empty Nest Blessed more often. My nest isn't empty yet, as three of my young adult children still live at home, but I enjoy reading what she shares. Here are some basics: Empty Nester FAQs
- Brene Brown on Empathy: How We're Showing Up in All the Wrong Ways for Those We Love on Elephant Journal was shared by a friend, and I can't remember who it was. But it's an interesting article accompanied by a video that demonstrates clearly the difference between sympathy and empathy. When someone we love is hurting, often the best thing we can do is just hurt with them instead of trying to cheer them up.
- And speaking of people around us hurting . . . over the past couple of days, this article at Red Tent Living has been shared a lot: The Casserole Rules. It made me think and I hope it's making many people think about how we offer support to our church family when they are grieving or in need. Here's the takeaway: When someone is hurting, we ought to love them without qualifying the pain or judging the cause.
Some fun things I've found during coffee breaks:
I'm pretty light on the fun things to share today, but that doesn't mean I don't find plenty to laugh at online. I just didn't remember to save it for quick reference!
Some things Homechool Review Crew members are sharing:
- Recent Crew reviews include: Online Times Alive from City Creek Press; products from Easy Grammar Systems; and College-Ready Writing Essentials.
- On the Crew blog there's a new article from Crewmate Amy of The WRITE Balance, who shares Cultivating Community as a Homeschool Family: A Fall Love Letter. She challenges and encourages homeschool families to extend their sense of community to their neighbors and others around them - and fall is a great time to reach out!
What I've been reading during longer coffee breaks:
Pudd'nhead Wilson by Mark Twain
Secrets in the Mist (A Gothic Myths Novel) by Anna Lee Huber
Detective Trigger and the Ruby Collar by M.A. Owens
