Five Minute Friday - Smile

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

I got a text a couple days ago from a homeschool friend. She is putting together the yearbook for our homeschool fellowship group and wanted photos of the committee chairpersons. Even though my committee wound up not actually doing anything, she still wanted to acknowledge me in the yearbook. And here I thought I could get away with not having my photo on the committee page this year! But she asked for a head shot so I said I'd look for one.

Surely it wouldn't be that hard? I don't take selfies, which gives away my age a bit. But I know there are pictures of me with my daughter, and probably a couple with my husband. And maybe I could crop it so it was a suitable head shot. so I started hunting through my phone's camera roll and it didn't look promising. I was at a friend's for coffee so she quickly snapped a couple photos and sent them to me so I had those I could use if I couldn't find anything else.

I went back to January before I found a picture of myself. With the exception of some family photos at the end of May (none of which would have worked to crop suitably), it has been six months since I had a decent picture of myself?! At least on my phone - my hubby likes to get photos of me sleeping in the car, but I didn't think those would be suitable for a yearbook committee chair headshot.

Like a lot of moms, I'm not in my pictures very often, and I don't like to be in pictures. I don't like how I look in pictures. I don't think that my feelings about that are likely to change, but maybe I need to get over my attitude and be willing to be in more pictures. Even if I think I look doofy or my double chin shows. Even if I'm having a bad hair day or I'm embarrassed at how overweight I am. Instead of focusing on whether I look okay for the picture, maybe it's more important that there's a record of my everyday experiences and having fun with my family. Making memories.

And smiling for the camera.

Couldn't use this one - you can't even see my smile!

This is the one from January.

This is the backup plan, taken just this week.

Smile while you still have teeth!

Smiling is definitely one of the best beauty remedies. If you have a good sense of humor and a good approach to life, that's beautiful. ~Rashida Jones

It's one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it's another thing to make a portrait of who they are. ~Paul Caponigro

You and your family are beautiful, and you clearly have lots of reasons to smile.

If there's votin' to be done, my vote goes to the backup plan picture; there's a winsome effervesence there (and I've never used those two words in one sentence before).

I don't allow pictures of me; the cancer thing's got my skin way too grey under its normal Mongol-yellow. Ug-LY. (Why yes, I'm vain...how could you tell?"

I'm an easy-going bloke,
and apply few strictures,
'cept this one that must be spoke:
I don't allow no pictures.
I used to be a fashion-plate,
well-groomed, and very fit,
the man that all men loved to hate,
an Asian Brad Pitt.
But now some things have laid full low
the standards I enjoyed,
and we shall not come to blows
if you have not employed
a camera, my photo took,
and placed the mess upon Facebook.
