Five Minute Friday - Broken

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

broken beyond repair
fix what's broken
broken glass
broken relationships
broken hearts

********************
There are plenty of examples of brokenness in the world today. It's sad. The saddest, to me, are the broken hearts. People who are broken because of hate, or violence, or even bad luck. Hearts broken over broken relationships. Sin. Sin breaks everything. Sin breaks our relationship to God and when that is broken, nothing else will be quite right either.

And we can't fix our brokenness. Not the sin brokenness that is the root cause of all the other brokenness. At best, we can patch things together or try to make the pieces fit, but our resources and abilities to mend what's broken are limited.

Only Jesus can fix what our sin has broken. His death and resurrection makes our healing and reconciliation possible. Admitting to him that we are broken and can't fix ourselves is the only way we ever get put back together. We must bring the broken pieces of our hearts and lives to Jesus and give them to him.

My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
~Psalm 51:17~

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near in the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility.
~Ephesians 2:13-14~

oh... a good reminder that I can bring my brokenness before the Lord, and he won't shame me for it. Instead, he'll pick up the pieces and somehow make me better.

Psalm 51 is a favorite of mine - a good reminder of all that God desires from me and what He can do for me.

Breaks my heart that we can't talk,
and it's quite the riddle
that each side's afraid to walk
and meet up in the middle.
Breaks my heart that we hate
the colour of another's skin,
even though God's loving fate
would have each as each other's kin.
Breaks my heart that we don't
see Jesus in another's eyes,
but knowing that really won't
make me or any other wise
to the sins we grew, somehow,
when we'd forgotten how to bow.

He is so relentlessly gentle with our brokenness. Thank you for this, Kym.
