Perhaps it's because so much of my life's calendar has been defined by school in some way that has shaped how I think of summer. It's summer break. Time for summer vacation, or for summer camp. Summer is for relaxing, for slowing down, for taking some time off from the usual things to do different things.

poolside or beach

sunglasses

sipping sweet tea or lemonade

baseball games

fireworks

fireflies

time at the cabin or cottage

a hammock in the shade

watching the sunset or a thunderstorm from the front porch

Something about summer makes me want to sit back and relax. Maybe even be lazy. Or maybe it's not as lazy as it seems to slow down. Oh it's very tempting to just do nothing for a week at a time, or to spend all of the summer months in vacation mode, but it's not practical or wise. There are things that need to be done, and vacations aren't free, after all.

But summer seems made for a slower pace and time to rest. Time to think and to recharge. Time to prepare for what's next. Time to just be with people, enjoying their company. Time to marvel at flowers and butterflies and blue skies. Time to hush and listen to birdsongs or rain on the roof.

The day is yours, and yours also the night;
you established the sun and moon.
It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;
you made both summer and winter.
~Psalm 74:16-17~

It is wonderful when life isn't as defined by the school calendar. I just stepped away from the classroom last year--though I tutor from home and still have my own kiddos--and couldn't agree more.

Blessings from your FMF neighbor,
Tammy

Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability...love that line. I am like you, school and then I teach, so more school. Breathe deep the warmth of summer, let go of worries and play.
