September Photo Album

For all these years we've been told that it's the month of March that comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, or the other way around. Well, this year, I thought that description fit September! On September 1st, a heavy band of rain related to Hurricane Ida went through here and wreaked havoc. I've been told that we got about eight inches of rain over a period of about three hours. We live in rolling farmland, and it's not unusual for creeks to overflow their banks during heavy rains, but this was crazy.

This is across from our neighbor's place that afternoon. We've lived here twenty years and have never seen this. Not long after I took this photo, so many bridges and roads were flooded that my son and daughter-in-law were unable to get home.

And our basement was flooded, which has never happened. The whole basement, ankle-deep in water. We didn't even realize what was happening, because we had no reason to expect it, and just happened that we didn't go downstairs during the afternoon. As soon as we found this, we started putting things up on 'higher ground' and carrying them upstairs. At least until the power went off, and then there wasn't a lot we could do for the next 24 hours.

Once we had power again, the cleanup and dry-out efforts kicked into full gear.

Our living room has been repurposed as a bedroom and "drying" area for the month.

The guys took out all the carpet and underlay, took off the paneling that had been on the lower half of the walls, and cut out the lower half of the drywall. We trashed all kinds of things, and put pretty much everything we could salvage into the garage. (Which means a long process of sorting it is still ahead of us!)

No, we don't have flood insurance, and so far we're not aware of any assistance due to this being an emergency situation. Still, our losses were relatively few, all things considered.

And so . . . welcome Fall!

More rain later in the month made us nervous and caused more flooded roads, but our property was fine.

This last week we've enjoyed beautiful sunny weather, which was fortunate for my son's best friend who got married in an outdoor ceremony!

We all attended, but didn't take pictures of each other for some reason. Just this one of my daughter and her boyfriend.

To our relief, September is going out like a lamb!
