Online Book Club - October Theme: Pumpkins

I've been joining some blogging friends in an online book club, and all our readers are invited to join in as well. Here's how it works:
At the beginning of the month Amanda at Hopkins Homeschool will share a book theme with us. It will be a theme instead of any specific title, so that anyone can participate - moms, dads, teens, kids, or the whole family. During the month, we will read books that go with the theme, and at the end of the month we'll share about what we read. Homeschool families may want to do unit studies or activities that go with the books they read, and they can tell us all about what they did and learned. Adults and teens may just want to share book reviews.
Unfortunately, Amanda has been unable to keep up with the book club due to some unforeseen circumstances, but we are continuing on, and since I think this is a great format to share about books, I hope we try it for at least another year! October is the last month we had planned for this project, so I'll have to find out if we'll continue on or not.

October's theme is Pumpkins, so I found myself in a very similar situation to last month with the Apple theme. If I had little kids, or if my granddaughter lived nearby, I would do some kind of unit study or find some counting books featuring pumpkins or something. But what could I read that would be at least sort of suited to just me?

I gave some thought to classic stories for the Halloween season and it struck me - isn't the headless horseman pictured with a pumpkin? Now if I remember correctly, the scene with the horseman and the mention of his pumpkin head makes up only a small portion of the story, but that is the imagery associated with it. So provided I find my copy, I can read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. I know it's not this one, but it backs me up on the pumpkin image!

And just a few days ago, we were wondering about the origin of the jack-o-lantern, and my memory on that was pretty faulty. A book search at Goodreads and then at my library turned up Trick or Treat: A History of Halloween by Lisa Morton. So I may not read the whole thing, but I will report to you what she says about pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns anyway!

I have a whole lot of books on my reading pile right now, and have not even made it halfway through the novel I started for September book club, so I probably have no business taking on new books! And I have two or three books on their way to me for reviews too! Well, during this busy month I will do what I'm able to. What are you reading? Leave a comment and let me know!

Visit all the participating bloggers sometime during the month to find out their reading plans:
