Five Minute Friday - Guess

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

lucky guess
take a wild guess
I guess . . .

********************

My husband often teases me about being what he calls wishy-washy. This usually happens when we're trying to decide something like which restaurant we'll go to, or whether something I'm indifferent about is a good idea. I'll answer, "I guess . . . " in a rather vague way, so I can see how that seems wishy-washy. Usually I feel that it doesn't matter which restaurant or whatever - either one is good so I deflect the decision to someone else.

The other situation that brings out an "I guess . . . " response is when we're not sure whether an answer is correct and no one is brave enough to admit they don't know. Or brave enough to actually speak the truth. We just hope that we're guessing right. Even if we're stumbling and lost, many of us would rather take a wild guess and hope we get lucky rather than ask for help. That might work at the carnival funhouse, but isn't a very effective way to live day to day.

Isn't it good that God isn't vague about what we need to do to follow him? His Word tells us everything we need to know to make wise decisions and be confident that we are walking in his way. Yes, there are a lot of difficult decisions and situations we find ourselves in, and doing what's right isn't necessarily easy. Yes, sometimes we have trouble choosing between two or more options that are good and right. But we don't have to guess about God's commands or hope that we've 'guessed right' about salvation. We can KNOW.

We know God's promises are faithful. We know God's word is true. We can know that we are saved. We know that he hears our prayers. We can know that we are following his will. We don't have to guess!

Your laws are always right;
help me to understand them so I may live.
~Psalm 119:144~

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. ~II Timothy 3:16-17

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he shall direct your paths.
~Proverbs 3:5-6~

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him.  ~I John 5:14-15

Stop guessing and know.

Amen! I can know. The Word will guide. I just have to read it and obey.
