Maybe you are searching among the branches for what only appears in the roots. ~Rumi
Just a bit of background - I work at a nursery, the kind that grows trees. I work in the office and don't pretend to know anything much about trees or plants in general. That said, this little bit of advice the owner of the business gave the staff one day stuck with me, and I recalled it when I saw this week's prompt. He was instructing the guys about the proper depth for planting a young tree and said that most people want to put that root ball deep into the pot and make sure that the soil is well packed so that the tree is "deep enough" and doesn't tip. But in order for the tree to be stable and grow up strong, the roots must grow down, so you have to leave room for that to happen.
We need to leave room in our lives and in the lives of those around us for our roots to grow down deep. Don't hunker down and hide under the soil where there's no room to put down roots and get firmly established. Don't stay shallow and just at the surface, with roots that spread out but don't dig deep for endurance and nourishment.
Grow deep roots to harvest rich fruit! When your roots run deep, you cannot help but bear the fruit of the Spirit. ~Michael Beckwith
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
~Colossians 2:6-7~
They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.
~Jeremiah 17:8~

I don't do deep-rooted life,
because it makes me fidget,
which leads my dear long-suffering wife
to say that I'm an idjit,
for good things that our God has granted
only come through patient toil
to the stalwart who are planted
in His rich and holy soil,
and I can't say I disagree,
for I have seen the redwoods grow,
but must say that they ain't me,
and I really have to go
along the pathway that I need,
that of a spinning tumbleweed.
I have been potting things wrong all these years. No wonder so many plants have died on my watch.
I'm also reminded that going too deep with a seeker/new Christian can scare them off. It's best to let God guide the discussion.

Thanks for sharing that good advice from the nursery owner. I am in the process of repotting some plants and am guilty of pushing the roots down.
