Five Minute Friday - Become

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

become one
become better

Last week I wondered if not working on Fridays would allow me to write my Five Minute Friday earlier in the day. Or at least ON Friday, instead of several days later. Turns out I'm here pretty late in the evening after a Friday that felt like a Saturday, because I slept late and then worked (at home, doing housewifey things) most of the day. We're having a Canadian Thanksgiving party here tomorrow, so I had some shopping to finish up, lots of baking to do, and some cleaning to look after. It would be nice if those kinds of things just magically got done, but we all know that it requires some time and effort and input to be ready for company.

What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. ~Zig Ziglar

My goals for tomorrow are things like having all the food ready at about the same time, having all the food turn out delicious, having the house tidy and providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and being able to relax and enjoy the company of my family and guests while they are here. I'm working on becoming a good hostess, and I think I'm better at it now than I was when I was just starting out, but I still have things to learn.

That is on my mind this weekend, but there are other things I am working on becoming as well. Other callings on my life. Things that become important to me because they are important to God. He asks his followers to do the things that help us become more like him. All of us become more like him as we develop the fruits of the Spirit, and each of us become more like him in a more individual way as we develop our spiritual gifts and use them in the way he leads.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control Against such things there is no law . . . Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. ~Galatians 5:22-23, 25

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. ~Ephesians 4:11-13

God gives us everything we need to become more like him, but the process of becoming will require our participation and effort.

To be what we are, and to become what are capable of becoming, is the only end of life. ~Robert Louis Stevenson

Kym, I love these reminders of how we become. I especially liked this: God gives us everything we need to become more like him, but the process of becoming will require our participation and effort. I'm very mindful that becoming requires participation and abiding. Learning to do that. Visiting from FMF #3 this week.
