One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.
while you were sleeping
while you're waiting
worth the while

This song from a Casting Crowns Christmas album was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the prompt for this week. Although my thinking went in a slightly different direction . . .
I have a love/hate relationship with the snooze button on my alarm clock. I love the option of closing my eyes for just five more minutes, so much that I even plan for my alarm to go off five or ten minutes before I actually need to be up so I can enjoy that. But too many swipes and the snooze button and oops! I've slept too late! And I hate that. What does it have to do with "While"? Just this - what do I miss out on while I'm snoozing lazily?
I thought about all the things that go on while we are sleeping and unaware, or while we are just going about our own business and we are unaware. While we are sleeping peacefully at night, on the other side of the world people are busy at work and school. And similarly, while we are focused on our own little concerns, God is at work. He prepares answers for us before we know we'll have the questions. He makes a way around the next bend in the road before we've gone far enough to see that bend up ahead. Now I'll come back to the question the song asks . . .
Will we be awake and alert to see what God has been doing? Will we respond to the call to action, to the trumpet when it sounds? Or will we hit the snooze button?
God is at work while we sleep, while we watch, and while we wait.
********************
But as for me, I will be on the watch for the LORD;
I will wait for the God of my salvation.
My God will hear me.
~Micah 7:7~
Therefore, dear friends, while you wait for these things, make every effort to be found without spot of blemish in his sight, at peace.
~II Peter 3:14~

Sometimes we sleepwalk through our days,
and moan that they rush by too fast,
but I have learned it's best to praise
the fact that we're not made to last,
for cancer of ennui sets in
to our spinning madding hearts,
and what new things we might begin
become done-over muddled parts
in a play that's gone on far too long,
the organist is half-asleep,
the diva merely mouths the song,
and it's thus best to make the leap
to embrace the mayfly life,
spring-born to be defined by strife.
I love that thought that God's work goes on whether we are asleep or awake, but it's good to wake refreshed and find out what our part in His work is today. I am your neighbour on FMF.
Love this.
Thanks for sharing.
It is amazing to think of God always being at work even while we are asleep. "God is at work while we sleep, while we watch, and while we wait." This morning I so appreciated reading your words. Thank you for sharing them!
