One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

whatever you like
what would you like?
like it or not

What would I like? I'd like it if we didn't have to move. I'd like it if we'd had enough money in the bank that we could have opted for early retirement and just stayed here. I might have liked having more time to get ready, though I'm not sure it would have made it easier emotionally.

We don't always get what we like. That's a hard truth about life. And it's not always easy to like what we get. I think it's okay to be sad or scared or even angry when things don't turn out the way we'd like, as long as we don't get stuck there.

We just celebrated Thanksgiving, when we're all encouraged to express our gratitude for all the good things we have; to thank God for all the ways He has provided for us and blessed us. Sadly, for many we turn from a day of being grateful to a day of consumerism without a trace of irony. How quickly we forget how much we have to be thankful for! Or perhaps we don't forget, but we don't do a great job of living like we remember.

Our family has so much to be thankful for, even during our current season of change and chaos. I don't like having to figure out what to pack, or leaving the comfort of this home and starting over. I certainly don't like moving a couple states away from my family and friends that are here. Like it or not, it's happening, and we must choose to live in gratitude for the many good things, and to be content.

. . . for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself. I know both how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content - whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.

~Philippians 4:11-13~

It is not doing the thing we like to do, but liking the thing we have to do, that makes life blessed. ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Success is getting what you want. Happiness is liking what you get. ~H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Every day of your life, you change the world. Absolutely, yes, we're out to change the world. I mean, you change it whether you like it or not. You wake up and you talk to the grocer. You either kick your dog or you pet him. There's a million decisions you have every day where you change the world. ~Jon Foreman

I'm sorry that you don't like having to move. I know that God turns all things to good for those who love Him, so I pray that you will reap so many blessings when you arrive and even as you leave. #15

Loving the Goethe comment. Made me think of changes I didn't want or think I would like, but then in retrospect they opened up unexpected doors of blessings I never would have experienced otherwise.
I'm sorry about you having to move like this. Sending hugs and prayers that even though there is heartache now, in retrospect there will be blessings for you as well.
