Five Minute Friday - Refrain

We don't use the word 'refrain' as much as we use the word 'chorus' but they're very similar. The refrain is the part of a song (or poem, or speech) that is repeated. With well-known hymns, we might remember most of the first verse and only bits and pieces of the other verses, but chances are we know the refrain well. 

As a worship leader I try to choose songs for our church services that tell Biblical truth. It's especially important that the chorus or refrain is theologically sound. Why? Because there's a good chance that people will remember it and perhaps have it stuck in their head for at least part of the week. So it should be something true and worthwhile. 

What is the familiar refrain that runs through my head? Is it a complaint or negative thinking? Is it mean or selfish? Is it wrong or untrue? Or is it something true and worthwhile? Is it something that comforts and gives hope, something that challenges me and reminds me to stay faithful? When I find myself dwelling on negativity or bitterness, I need to stop repeating that ugly chorus and replace it with a beautiful chorus that focuses on God's goodness and truth.

Join in the familiar refrain - His love endures forever.

There's something going through my head
(bear with, this won't take long),
remining me of what's ahead;
it is the dead man's song.
Can't say that I like the tune;
played on mind's hurdy-gurdy,
but in a way it is a boon
companion on my journey,
tellling me to face the truth
with clear eye and calm heart,
to make cheeerful demeanour proof
that I did not fall apart
and that to all, this word I send,
that I was faithful to the end.
