A Brief Look at Baroque
Our music study (and other studies too!) was curtailed this week because I have family here visiting. School is unofficially on the backburner until the first week of October. This is why we homeschool - because family is more important than an assignment schedule.
We started the week by introducing the Baroque period of music and listened to a Pachelbel's Canon in D as a prime example of the music of that time period. Of course the kids are very familiar with this piece - who isn't!? - so we listened to a very traditionally styled recording of the piece, as close as possible to how it would have sounded when Pachelbel wrote it. Then we listened and compared it to Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Canon, which modern listeners know well. I allowed Landon and Kennady to identify what was the same (the melodic lines) and what was different (the instruments used, TSO uses vocals and added lyrics, additional percussion and harmony parts on the TSO version, etc) I have some Scarlatti for us to listen to as well, and we need to finish filling out our note pages. Then I will probably wait until the first week of October before introducing the first individual composer we are studying - Johann Sebastian Bach.
Kennady and I also did our piano lesson - but on Wednesday instead of Monday. I think I need to remind her to practice today!

Yay for family visiting! Hope you enjoy your time with them. I just reminded mine to go and practice his piano :)
I love how intentional you are about the music. We just listen to it. In fact, we have hundreds of CD's, many of them bought in the Netherlands, and even a complete edition of Bach (missing only 1 box of organ CD's). Only trouble is, my husband hates harpsichord, and there's a lot of that in Bach. :(
Enjoy the time with your family!

I have to admit that I prefer the sound of Bach played on the piano to Bach played on the harpsichord! I have a limit on how much harpsichord I can stand at a sitting. LOL
