Homeschool Mother's Journal: In Which We Start 2012

In our homeschool this week...  it turned out to be another week of making do since we still don't have our computer back.  Kennady finished the math pages I had printed for her, and can't do any more until I get the computer back.  On Monday, Landon and Kennady did a little bit of social studies work on Great Britain, and I had hoped to talk about the rest of the United Kingdom this week, but we didn't get to that.  We are working on Ireland today, but Scotland and Wales will have to wait until next week.  I gave Landon a week off from the Composer study, and Kennady and I enjoyed some extra study of Tchaikovsky and Swan Lake.

Other than those things, everyone worked on their independent schoolwork as best we could without updated assignment lists.

Another extra we fit in was the study of the movie "Amazing Grace" and the work of William Wilberforce using the Z-Guide to the Movies.

In other news... To start the week and the new year, Kennady sang a duet with me in church on Sunday.  We both had suffered colds on the weekend so our voices were a little sketchy but since we were working together, it turned out okay!  We were back to midweek activities at church this week as well, but with a bittersweet note as our youth pastor announced his resignation and will be with us only one more week.

We finally bought a new TV, which was a highlight of the week in many ways! We've had a TV on our wishlist for many months, ever since our old TV (and when I say "old" I mean we'd had it for at least a dozen years) got fried during a power outage in the summer.  We'd been using Harrison's TV ever since.  It sure was nice to watch a little hockey and some DVDs on a larger, clearer flatscreen TV instead of the old one!

Harrison is working extra hours this weekend, and we have some fun plans so we are looking forward to a busy couple of days!

My favorite thing this week was... finally getting Kennady up on the platform to sing with me on a Sunday morning.

What's working/not working for us... The computer is still not working! So no printer, no pictures, and we're running out of schoolwork because so many of the documents and files we need are on it and we don't have access.  The good news is that the computer hospital dealt with all the problems and is replacing the motherboard so we should have the computer back on Monday.  I sure hope so!

Questions/thoughts I have...  I received my Pitsco order of catapult and trebuchet kits for co-op class so now I will be adjusting my lesson plans.  Co-op starts at the end of the month, so I have only a couple of short weeks to finish planning.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share...

"It is one of the difficult and delightful subtleties of life that we must deeply acknowledge certain things to be serious and yet retain the power and will to treat them often as lightly as a game."  ~C.S. Lewis

On the bookshelf...

  • Already Compromised by Ken Ham and Greg Hall with Britt Beemer
  • Merlin by Stephen R Lawhead
  • Tchaikovsky by Roland John Wiley
I'm almost caught up writing about books on Kym's Bookcase.

A Parting Shot...

Today is Epiphany so the tree comes down.  Here's a last look:

Yikes on the computer! It's amazing how much a computer helps us with our schooling! What did homeschoolers do 25 years ago? LOL (I know you don't need a computer for schooling, but it sure helps, doesn't it?)

Despite the colds, I'm sure it was a blast singing with your girl! A special memory!

Computers--can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. I know we're living on borrowed time as my computer is already 8 years old. My motto is "Backup, backup, backup!"

I'll bet your duet was fantastic!! Horray for getting your little one to sing in public...big accomplishment!
How in the world did you do this without your computer?
Also...the Ken Ham Book you're reading (ALready Compromised), any good?

Sorry, no video of the duet. That I'm aware of, anyway. LOL

I've been using our old computer, which is much more convenient than going to the library, but it is limited and doesn't have a working printer. I know - how did anybody homeschool before computers? It boggles the mind. LOL

I am almost finished the Ken Ham book and it is really good!
