Our Slightly Weird Word for 2014

Word for 2014

So... I'd been thinking ahead, hoping to choose a "Word of the Year" for 2014, and I was going with things like "Less" and "Simplify". We have too much stuff, so we need less of it. I need to weigh less. I probably need to consider doing less. Our lives are busy and can get chaotic, so maybe simplifying and streamlining things would help. And then the hubster and I had a conversation about our goals and plans for 2014 (and I hadn't told him I was going to blog about this!) and he proclaimed that for our family, it would be the year to REDUCE. It feels like an odd choice of word (for blogging purpose anyway!), but it describes what we feel we need to do.

It seems to us that we have lots of things that could benefit from reduction - debt, spending, stuff, calendars, and waistlines!

We are going to REDUCE our debt load.
We are going to REDUCE our spending.
We are going to REDUCE the amount of stuff we have.
We are going to REDUCE our outside commitments.
We are going to REDUCE our waistlines.

We're still working out the details of how we'll accomplish those things, but it will involve steps like watching our budget and cutting spending wherever it's practical; giving away or selling or trashing the stuff we have that we don't need; making the commitment to avoid acquiring more stuff; and breaking bad eating habits and replacing those with healthier eating and exercising habits. We know that we will have to say "no" to some things that look like bargains and to some activities and commitments that are good but perhaps not as important as other priorities. Some of those decisions will be hard, I'm sure. We're preparing to meet the challenge.

Happy New Year!

I like your word. Although my 2014 word is "abiding," I could definitely stand to reduce a lot of things around here as well. I liked your line, "we will have to say "no" to some things that look like bargains." That's kind of been one of my downfalls in the past ...
