In our homeschool... It's always seemed funny to me that just when everyone is sort of settling into a new school year, there's a long weekend to throw us off. Don't get me wrong - we like taking a three day weekend as much as anyone else, but the timing is odd, you have to admit. I don't remember for sure, but maybe when I was in school we didn't start until right after Labour Day. Not a bad idea, really. Anyway, this year, like most others, we got started around mid-August and have been ramping up since then, so the long weekend comes as a welcome break and yet it still disrupts the routines that are just starting to feel established.

So our shortened week went something like this - yes, we took Monday off. Completely. Kennady was going to start guitar lessons on Monday, but her new teacher decided to take the day off after all, which suited us admirably as well since we had company coming in the afternoon. We dove right into schoolwork on Tuesday, however, since that was the rescheduled day for Kennady's first guitar lesson, and it was the first day for the new semester of co-op gym class and for chorus rehearsals (for me and for Kennady). Driving about all day Tuesday meant that not much in the way of reading and writing got done, but that's the way Tuesdays will be - whatever we can get done in the morning will have to be good enough.

Wednesday was a bit of a short day as well, since Landon had his final driving instructor time booked, and I took Kennady along so we could get her some new running shoes. The need to get that done had been emphasized the day before when she found that her shoes really were just a bit uncomfortable during gym.

Yesterday and today have been much more productive as far as hitting the books. During the week they've both worked on: Science, Math, Composition, and Grammar. Landon has finished up the last of the "past due" History reading and is ready to start US History next week. Kennady got started on Geography and Literature this week. She's also finishing up a project from the Unit Study based on the book about C.S.Lewis from YWAM Publishing which we'll be reviewing in a couple weeks. (Other upcoming reviews we are working include: Stinky Kid Math, games from USAopoly, and Fast Transcripts)

In other news... We were busy socializing last weekend - don't let anyone tell you homeschoolers are "unsocialized"! Our weekend included an engagement celebration on Saturday evening, a bonfire with friends on Sunday evening, and company for a cookout at our place on Monday afternoon.

Being prepared for company meant that I put most of the finishing touches on our living room. Back in February, we had a pipe freeze and burst in the house, causing water damage to floors, walls, and ceilings in our living room, entry, and family room. All the restoration work was finished over the summer, and we've been slowly putting those rooms back together. Since we had to completely empty the rooms to get new flooring installed, we are doing a little redecorating and making some changes as we move things back.

As I mentioned, Kennady and I were back to chorus rehearsals this week, and for me that means I started singing Christmas music on Tuesday night. Yeah. Mixed feelings about that.

Got the news that our oldest son has got a new apartment lined up, so he will be moving in a couple weeks. And we started planning a little bit for his first visit home since he moved out in May. He's planning to be here for a few days while my parents and aunts are visiting at the end of next month.

Things that made me smile... I think Kennady planned to take this sign outside to the end of driveway on Monday - y'know, to let our guests know that they were at the right place.

I finished Luther and Katharina: A Novel of Love and Rebellion by Jody Hedlund and reviewed it here. You can also find other book-related posts on my book blog, Just A Second.

A parting shot...  My new Deanna Raybourn book came in the mail. I'm so excited to start reading!

I sing Christmas music year-round because Aiden insists on Silent Night and Away in a Manger at bedtime, lol! ;)
