In our homeschool . . . Here's the thing. I know my kids did some schoolwork this week - I just don't really know what they did yet. See, we had family visiting this week, so schoolwork took a back seat, and when I told the kids to work on school, I pretty much let them choose what they would work on. I know Landon worked on History, Math, and Drafting, and he (finally) finished reading The Scarlet Letter. He says he didn't like it, but at least he could give a clear summary of the story when asked. I know that Kennady worked on Music and Geography and Science, and other than that I couldn't really say. I suppose I'll figure it all out on Monday, and we'll get a handle on how much we need to do to get back on track before Thanksgiving.
In other news . . . My parents and aunts arrived by train last Friday night - very late! - so my week has been busy in just spending time with them. We have gone out to eat a few times, and they have been taking turns tagging along when I have to shuttle kids hither and yon. (I don't know exactly where "hither and yon" is located, but it's a fun expression that I think should be used more often!)
On Wednesday evening, our church held the annual Trunk or Treat event. Thanks to the heavy rains in the area, we moved the entire event indoors and hoped for the best. We wondered if it might be very poorly attended. I mean, if I hadn't been committed to decorating atrunk room and participating, I wouldn't have thought it worth my while to pack costumed little ones into a van and taking them over - WE were completely soaked just running from the house to the cars and then from the cars into the church, and it was coming down in buckets! As it turned out though, we had a record attendance and LOTS of families from the community came, many of whom we had not met before, and the event was a huge success. We pray that the more important successes will still come - that as a church we'll be able to continue building a relationship with those new families, and that they will come to know the Lord as a result.
To add to the family focus this week, our oldest son also came home for a visit. He arrived in the wee hours of Thursday morning and unfortunately I'd written down his plans wrong on the calendar and didn't have a bed made up for him! What a sad welcome for his first visit home after moving out! We are enjoying the very full house this weekend. Today, we're enjoying a deep fried turkey and smoked salmon for our big "everyone's home" family dinner. It's almost time to eat, so I need to post this and get the table set!
Yesterday, the hubster and I went with my parents and aunts to Cumberland to ride the Western Maryland Railroad - a steam train excursion with some fall colors to enjoy. We had a beautiful day to do it, with comfortable weather and no rain. It was overcast most of the day, and the boldest of the autumn colors were already past, but it was still lovely and it was a trip that the hubster and I will likely do again sometime. (I will post a full collection of photos sometime next week!)
Things that made me smile . . . family time, fall colors, and a steam train.
