Homeschool Weekly - Unexpected Edition

This post may contain affiliate links - using affiliate links from Homeschool Coffee Break helps fuel this blog and our homeschool - thank you!

I titled this the "Unexpected Edition" because the plans we had for last week changed dramatically from what we'd expected a week ago. I wrote most of this expecting to post it on Friday, but even that changed, so I am posting on Monday instead. Read on to find out what our week was like...

In our homeschool... we did get off to a great start, and I thought we'd be able to do a little catch-up, but alas, it was not to be. Science, Math, History, and Literature were our featured subjects this week and both Landon and Kennady have been spending a lot of time getting their respected novels read. Landon is working on The Scarlet Letter (he's not a particular fan) and Kennady is working on Pride and Prejudice (and finding it a bit more of a challenge than she'd expected).

As for me, I shared some of the plans I had for making good use of National Get Organized Week to get my desk a little cleaner and my grading and other school things a bit more organized and tidy. All things considered, I did a pretty good job of it, although there are some things I left undone and will have to tackle later this week, or maybe next week. Due to circumstances beyond my control this time, rather than to my own laziness and tendency to procrastinate! Hey, just keepin' it real.

We wound up not doing much school on Thursday, and none on Friday, because we made last minute plans to go visit my husband's family - an unexpected trip. I don't expect much school will get done this week either, as we are heading back out later today.

Reviews I'm working on include The Ultimate Homeschool PlannerKoru Naturalsand the movie Do You Believe?

In other news... I'm sure there are many little items I had intended to share here, but they are now overshadowed by the events of the unexpected trip to visit family. My mother-in-law has had quite a few health concerns lately, after successfully completing treatment for cancer in the summer. In the past week she took a turn for the worse and was hospitalized. The situation sounded serious indeed, so we made the decision to go visit over the weekend. We are very glad we went when we did, because about an hour after we arrived, the phone call came from the hospital that she was in distress and my husband and his sister went there straight away. Later on, the rest of us gathered in her hospital room as well, and we all had opportunity to tell her we loved her and for her to say good-byes. She passed away peacefully on Friday evening.

It was expected - yet unexpected. We are busy this week with the family, with making arrangements, and with the memorial service. Needless to say, most of the other items on our calendar for this week are being cancelled or set aside.

I recommend... checking this out if you're interested in joining the 2016 Schoolhouse Review Crew.

On the bookshelf...

Murther and Walking Spirits by Robertson Davies
Ruby (Dakotah Treasures #1) by Lauraine Snelling
Unequal Affections: A Pride and Prejudice Retelling by Lara S. Ormiston - actually, I just finished this, but haven't written the review yet. And probably won't get to it until the end of the week.

You can find reviews and other book-related things on my book blog, Just A Second.

A parting shot... I was ready for hockey season, which started this week.

I've been looking for new pajamas and wasn't having any luck until I checked the fan-wear section instead. Now I've got these very comfy Washington Capitals pajama pants, and I think Landon is a wee bit jealous, as he had Caps pajama pants on his Christmas wishlist!
